way to tell difference between part and full time 4x4?

Hey guys, im new here and was hoping someone could help me.
this one guys has a 1999 4runner 4x4 but he doesnt know if it is part time or full time. i know limited 4x4 came standard with full time and it was optional on other models. is there way to easily differenciate the two?

correct me if im wrong but fill time 4x4 also means it would have the center differential right?

Difference since 2003

Since 2003, all 4x4 4Runners can be driven in 4WD full-time. The V8 version is not selectable, the V6 version can be turned to 2WD (rear) or 4WD (full-time). Both 4WD versions (V8 or V6) come with a Torsen center differential which allows for 4WD on any surface.

If a 4Runner says 4x2, it is rear wheel drive only.

I am not sure of earlier years.

In 99-00 the 4Runner Limiteds all came with either 2WD or selectable Full-Time 4WD. On the other 99-00 models, they had the tradtional Part-Time 4WD just like the 96-98.

Yes, the full-time have the center differential which is lockable.

You can differntiate the part-time and full-time by looking at the badge to see if its Limited, SR5, or Sport. Also you can look at the 4WD shifter, the Limited have a push-button for 4Hi-open (full time), then shift down for 4Hi-lock (part time), then slide it right, and up for N and 4Lo. The part-time is just push-button 4Hi (part time) and up for N and 4Lo.
