Yes we all have leg legimate complaints:

1-Seat Problem
2-Thump
3-Annoying Rattles

But you know what, take a look. How many, truly, have electrical problems? Mechanical? Structural?

We all rag on Toyota on poor quality, but I know in my case, the Thump is no big deal, and hopefully the seat is fixed. I love the rig, solid, no mechanical or electrical.

How many Domestics, and European Rigs can say that?

I agree. People automatically assume that because it's a Toyota everything is going to be perfect and will hate on them for even the silliest things.

LR3's have reports of front LCA's failing at highway speed, some cars eat transmissions, some eat oil (ford says it's acceptable to burn up to a quart every 1k miles), and some are just junk.
 
..honestly how many of us have actually seen a Toyota actually sitting on the side of the road broken down or, Found On Roadside Dead. No Offense

rattles, what rattles?? Now if you want rattles, try the latest Nissans. Rattles drove me away from a 2007 Nissan Armada, well rattles and terrible dealer experience both drove me away. I've since taken the T4R on same rough Arizona forest service roads/trails that I thought would rip the Armada apart. The T4R barely makes a squeak on those same rough drives. Big difference IMHO, especially considering that I'm comparing an 07 Nissan with 30K miles against an 04 T4R with 60K miles.

I just recently moved back from Nissan after trying them as an alternate to my previous good experiences with Toyotas. Had a 2000 Tundra with a 2004 Highlander, went to a 2007 Nissan Armada, after less than a year back to Toyota with the T4R. I learned my lesson: left Toyota due to higher up front cost for same features, thought I'd do almost as well for less money, came crawling back after less than a year.

Just so I don't seem to be picking on Nissans - I had some good Nissan cars years ago, and I'd still put Nissan far ahead of Big 3 - which I have not owned for years since the last one was found on road dead for me.

So I agree with OP, we all complain, but I think we have to dig deep to find something to moan about on the T4R, especially when compare to other choices

I can chime in about about rattles. My 4runner is going on 11 years where as our Suburban is only 6 or 7 and probably gets driven a little harder, but it still has a lot more rattles than my 4runner.

The quality of the radio buttons are terrible on the Suburban as well. Even those these are just small items they make a big difference, at least in my book.
 
I used to have a slight rattle behind the driver information center, and the a pillar and some have complained about the roof. But those are are minor I suppose. Which car doesn't have rattles.
 
Toyota as a whole has slipped while other brands have caught up and are closing the gap on quality. Some vehicles like the 4Runner, Lexus LS, TLC/LX have maintained their quality for the most part.

Thump, pretty much the greater majority of 4WD/4x4 Toyotas.

Rattles, a good number of 4th gen 4Runners with the moonroof.

Structural problems, none have surfaced on the 4Runner. More than enough to warrant a concern on the FJ Cruiser. 2nd gen Tacoma bed cracks, warped tailgates.

Mechanical, 6th gen Camry and ES350 6-speed transmission flaring. 2nd gen Tundra, bad batch of camshafts, driveshaft issue. Let's not forget the 3.0 V6 and oil sludging.

I like Toyota and I trully wish I can say they're the best, but the fact is they've been trying too hard to beat GM and be #1. The question is at what cost and expense they took to get there. Toyota is not what it use to be. The evidence is clear they're slipping, while their higher ups have acknowledged the fact they have quality issues, what they plan to do about it remains to be seen. IMHO, just because there is a Toyota badge on it doesn't automatically mean high quality. What the Toyota badge does stand for is perceived quality. Consumer Reports no longer gives new Toyota models the automatic recommended rating. Before someone says CR should stick to rating toasters and washing machines, I'm sure that same statement wouldn't have been made against CR, if they didn't strip Toyota of their automatic recommended rating.

Just my unbias opinion. And no, I don't hate Toyota. If I did, I wouldn't have three of them in three years and still continue to recommend them. I just hope they realize the quality gap is narrower than ever before and they need to focus on what probably got them to the top, if they want to stay on top.
 
:iagree: My 4Runner has had no serious issues whatsoever and I am very pleased with it. The concern is that other Toyota/Lexus models are having more serious problems that are not what you expect from Toyota.

However, the Toyota of years past wouldn't have issues like the driveline thump or the sunroof problems, either. Toyota didn't get where they are by just being better than Ford or other brands - Toyota used to stand for quality, period.

I saw one the other week, I think it was the 1st 4runner I have ever seen on the side of the road, it had the hood up too.

It actually made me really sad inside...
