WEAK/BRITTLE windshield

I have a 2011 Blizzard pearl sr5 Ive got about 6k miles on it and I live in middle TN, well I have recently been on two road trips once to texas and once to Louisiana. On the way home today from Louisiana I was about 3-4 car lengths behind a 335i and I hear a rock hit the windshield Nothing out of the norm and after closer inspection it put a mean little chip in the windshield. it happened several other times and each and every time it left a CHIP! I am so angry I drove my durango for 160k miles and only had 1 maybe 2 chips the whole time. I have a total of 8 rock chips on my windshield!

Any others having trouble with this?

Why are you angry? Almost every vehicle I have had in the last 20 years has either had a chipped or cracked windshield. The list includes several Hondas, two Toyotas, A dodge Dakota and the list goes on...
 
given that you own a $40K vehicle, you have full coverage w/ glass coverage right? if so, get it replaced! :)

I had my Durango for 150k and NEVER had a chip or a crack. It got 'sandblasted' to the point that it needed to be replaced once.

I had a rock hit my F-350 in the lower corner a few months back, thought nothing of it, looked at it the next day and there was a 2' crack running across from where the rock hit.

I think it all comes down to luck with windshields. I really don't think certain glass is really weaker than others, if it is it really should not be by much.

I've heard a few rocks bounce on the windshield so far and no damage, yet.
 
Well I'm only a little angry because I have 8 rock chips in my windshield and it's less than 4 months old. Each time it got chipped I heard the rock hit it each time it was very light hit where I would normally not think anything of it. Oh well I DO have dull coverage and will make a call Monday. Guess I'll fall back a little further from the car on front of me. Well thanks for the replies guys. Have a safe weekend!!

BP I'm a little worried too. 5k miles and I have a chip right in front of me too small to claim but every once in a while I end up focusing on it reminding me it's there. Didn't even know when it happened.

I had a 02 Xterra for 80k mile and had everything except boulders thrown at it and only have 2 small chips. I even had an addict try to put half a brick thru the passenger window and failed, he was chased away in time, and all it left was a nasty scratch but no chip.

I was thinking of get one of those bug shields to raise the hood line maybe it would block some of the road debris. Anyone think this would help?
 
Sorry for your misfortune, but I have to agree with westwind77 that it comes down to (lack of) luck with windshield damage. Of my last 4 vehicles, two received rock hits that grew rapidly into elongated cracks within the first few months of ownership. Whether windshield damage, scratches, or dings, anytime you have damage occur to a brand new vehicle is upsetting. Here out west, chips and cracks can occur with some regularity, so I usually wait until the windshield is pretty bad off before replacing it, so as to minimize the number of times one may need to be replaced. I have a XJ with 3 cracks each running between 1-2 feet long. With signs of the beginnings of cracks 4 and 5, it will be replaced in short order.
 
I never had an issue with my Toyotas. I did have a nice chip in my Titan's windshield but it was from a good size rock. It's all about luck and where you drive. I drove 60,000 highway miles with my Accord and it looked like a golf ball. My 2007 Crown Vic patrol car has a ton of chips in the window. But this car has been through hell and back. If you drive on the highway expect dings and chips.
 
I'm at 14k miles and my vehicle is just over a year old. I have nothing on my windshield thus far (knock on wood). I drive in dallas, around downtown, galleria, and so far so good. I think it just comes down to luck and debris on the roadway. It's unfortunate, but it does happen. Perhaps a bug deflector would help redirect the air? I've heard it works for some, I don't have one but anyone with one may chime in and confirm the rumor.
 
IMO, the windshields are very prone to chipping based on this being a VERY frequent topic here on the forum. I too had a huge chunk removed from a rock at the 5k mark. I'm wondering it is has anything to do with the angle of the windshield? Either way, it sucks.
 
Talk to FJ owners about windshields! I had my FJ for two years and had two windshield replacements. The angle of the windshield really makes a difference. I've had several rock hits on the 4R with no chips yet. If it had been the FJ I would have had at least two more windshields replaced.
 
14000 miles and no chips (so far)...I had to replace the windshield 2x in 1 month on my 1995 T100. I have driven Police cars for several hundred thousand miles and only once did a windshield need replacement. Sometimes it is just the luck of the draw. If you hate the truck that much buy another Durango before Chrysler goes bankrupt again! Its pretty safe to say that large auto manufacturers that can't stay solvent might not make the highest quality vehicles on the road! Toyotas are not perfect, but they are better than most of their competition!
 
On the day I took delivery of my '11 Ltd, a corrugated plastic election sign was blown by 40 mph winds. The edge of the plastic actually left an area where it looks like someone tried to clean the glass with 300 grit sand paper.

At 750 miles, a pebble from the car in front of me left a divot in the glass about the size of three pin heads clustered together right in the driver's field of vision.

At 1,500 miles, another pebble and another chip on the passenger side.

Sure the angle of incidence has a lot to do with it, but c'mon....
 
The angle does have everything to do with it. The FJ has the same if not a worse problem. The windshields on these two vehicles are more upright. When a rock hits the windshield, the windshield has to take more of the energy from the impact. With windshields that are sloped back more, the rock more or less skips off the windshield reducing the chances of making a chip in the windshield.
 
Windshield protected us.

On the freeway at 70 mph a piece of wood about 2 by 8 by 16 inchs hit our windshield dead center, it left some scatches, but we are so thankful it
did not break. One reason I bought a Four Runner was road hazards, it
has also had to run over a tire on the same freeway. I am very happy
I had a good vehicle and would recomend it to anyone.
 
How's this for a pebble. I guess it was too heavy to fly high enough to hit my windshield. Fortunately...

We had my wifes 07' glass replaced 3 times for chips/cracks from hwy driving. Granted insurance pays for it, but it's a PIA. Not to mention when you see them pull out the windshield and put it back in, you always wonder if it's done properly.

My 05 F250 I have 100,000 MI never had the windshield replaced and about 75% is hwy driving on it.
