Weak Plastic Points on 3rd Gen and a SOLUTION!

In using the JB Weld for plastic, I did take a wire wheel on the end of a dremel and "roughed up" the mating surfaces of the plastic parts I was joining. For now it seems to work but I have to agree, the primer and solvent approach sounds more effective.

That should work great.

If you ever have adhesion problems primers will save the day. After many years of working with plastics I find using a good primer is the main contributor to a professional long lasting bond.

Odd ball fact: the heat deflection tiles on the exterior of the Virgin Galactic spaceships are literally glued to the frame. Only primer and epoxy. No mechanical fasteners of any kind... adhesives have come a long way.

I used the solder iron and a high weight zip tie as filler material for the door panel repairs.

I road raced motorcycles in the mid 90's and the plastic welding saved me a lot in body parts if I went down.

Great thread but who actually uses a key on the rear hatch????:noidea:
I think I've used it less than a handful of times in 19 years & that was back in 99-04 when I was mountain biking a lot but the Fob opens the lock or window.

I gotta admit, I use the rear hatch key from time to time. Maybe I am the "one Ranger" when it comes to this.....LOL

Interesting. So you take a soldering iron and melt a zip tie in and around the joint? If so, I think I might need to try this. I plan on keeping this rig until the wheels fall off. Do you have any pics of this process and the "plastic weld?"

What about ABS parts (I've seen some interior pieces that have ABS stamped on them)? Do you go with the plumbing-type ABS cement, or with one of these epoxies?

ABS is easier to glue. Best to just check the label of the adhesive you want to use but I think epoxies should work.

Bump -- A few months ago I pulled off some interior panels and had a few of the clip mounts snap off or crack. I repaired them with the Loctite Plastics stuff. This weekend I pulled these same panels off and NONE of the glued mounts broke again. Wow! This glue really holds up.
