Just wanted to remind everyone, whenever you are working on the car wear those things! I got away with it for the last time today! Here I was underneath the 4runner, Mr.Bada$$ with a drill, then everything went to hell. The drill bound up knocking a large chuck of mud mixed with metal flakes off the frame. Where did they go? Right into my eyes. Alas, I was there on the cold dark ground writhing in pain, when I realized this crap wasn't coming out by rubbing it in! Well I ended up at the eye doctor to have him swabbing out my eye lids and telling me he needed to polish my cornea lens, NO THANKS! I declined, he said it might get better without the polishing! Anyways, moral of the story, wear the glasses or goggles for your own safety, even if you think you look like an idiot!

Good advice, I had a similar experience last weekend when I was trimming trees in my backyard. Not 30 seconds after my wife asked if I should be wearing safety glasses did saw dust fly into my eye from about 20' away.:bash: I was rubbing/cleaning, poking at my eye the rest of the day, it sucks

Owwweee. I've done that before but not nearly as bad as your situation sounds. I would probably give a big NO THANKS to the polishing recommendation also. Hope everything fixes itself but those eyeballs will feel weird for at least another day I'll bet.

Absolutely, it is still blurry!

-Hearing the doctor say, "Okay don't freak out, but your eye is bleeding" is a little unnerving!

-Dusty, yea it really gives you a new perspective, nothing else matters except that little piece of crap in your eye, all your worries fade away. All your attention is on your eye.

Well the fully sealed goggles would prevent it all together, while they are a little bulky, it could prevent a trip to the doctors.

My dads coworker was replacing the floors at his house so he had to remove all the old nails, he came across one that was stuck, so he put a little more elbow grease into it, the nail ended up coming out and flinging right into his eye. Kind of a freak accident but he wasn't wearing any safety glasses, the guy is like 25 years old and now blind in one eye. That's why I always wear mine, yah never know when your gonna need em!

I wear them ALL the time (when performing any sort of mechanically work...you see..I started out my adult life as a machinist) and at age 51 I am proud to say I've yet to have an eye fall out. :beer:

Seventh grade shop class had a old playboy centerfold with a sign that said "this picture has no impact on a blind man! Wear your safety glasses!"
That did it for me.

First job out of college as an engineer and the first safety lecture had a film of the eye doctor "repairing" a lacerated eyeball. Kinda like the old Ohio State Trooper "safety" films we watched in drivers ed. Scare you bad enough to do the correct thing.

Shop instructor had to have a piece of rust drilled out from his eye after going to sleep the night before without realizing he didn’t remove all of the dirt that landed in his eye from the day before

Got lucky for many years even with glasses & had some close calls so now when I do something where I expect stuff to fall from all over I put on the cheap swimming goggles.

i was about 19-20 and was grinding on some metal and a piece ended up in my eye. not just inside the eye lid but i actually got a sliver stick inside the eyeball. i could feel i still in there and it was scratching the inside of my eyelid every time i blinked. had to go to the eye doctor to have it removed. i remember him telling me he could already see that sliver of metal rusting.
not a fun experience and have always worn safety glasses since.

I had the same thing and the rust is permanent.

Cut Off wheel blew up in my face while I was working under my jeep. Fortunately I was wearing a full clear face shield.

Years ago my roommate was working construction and got an opportunity to use a 22 caliber concrete nail gun. First round misfired, the casing exploded and a piece of brass when into his eye and permanently damaged the lens and cornea.
