Weather tech floor mats warning

Just a little warning about weathertech floor mats In the 4th gen 4runner I love the product first off but had a pretty scary moment a couple of times.

So here is the deal I had my oem mats under my weathertech mats and got on the gas to pass someone and the gas pedal stuck to the floor nearly caused me to crash in to someone. After trying to replicate the incident on some back roads figured out the issue. I removed the old floor mat from under the weather tech and hooked the mat to the hooks in the floor. Yes this is something simple but could save some one some issues because what was happening is the accelerator was hooking up on the hard floor mat.

I have not had an issue since

Just don't want to see anyone get hurt

That's the reason Toyota recalled the original floor mats. Too thick and gas pedal got stuck

Did you ever wonder what those 2 holes in the driver's side weathertech mats were for?

Not trying to pick on you here, but I want to make sure that this is made very clear.

The highlighted/underlined/italicized portion is about 99% of the reason of the unintended acceleration issues. People stacked floor mats and did not use them correctly (among using towels stacked on cardboard stacked on ect.)

You do not install floor mats on top of other floormats, I know a lot of people do this, but it's not correct and can lead to the exact situation you described. Run one set of floor mats and make sure they are correct for the vehicle and properly installed, period.

The WeatherTech instructions clearly advise to remove the existing floor mats:

Installation Instructions | Installation Instructions | WeatherTech.ca

Do you need to remove the existing mats out of your vehicle to install the FloorLiners?

Yes, for safety reasons we recommend that the existing mats are removed prior to installing our products and ALL instructions included in the packaging be read and followed completely!
 
I won't pile on, but this is definitely NOT a weathertech problem.

Just thought I would bring the safety issue up and for people to make sure they don't run a mat under the weathertechs and hook them in

You should never put two sets of floor mats on top of each other when you only need one set. Its a disaster waiting to happen, but you should be glad you are safe and not sorry. Lesson learned.
 
+1 for no stacking mat on top of each other.
The ridges on the mat are a big factor when one is at the spot where the pedal latches on it.
Same could happen with certain footwear; one could catch and interfere with releasing the clutch or the gas pedal.
 
Thanks for the safety reminder. It's important for prospective buyers who might not be savvy when it comes to modding cars to come across threads like these if they're interested in WeatherTech!!

That being said; if anyone's considering getting WeatherTech cargo mats...just have the entire carpet detailed and install the new mats! Vacuum 1-2 times a month & your carpet will still look brand new months later. Love WeatherTech, my next purchase will be rear cargo mat but there are limitations to rear cargo ones depending on your use for the rear area. Do your research!
 
Operator error. I put weathertechs in every vehicle I own. They are formed to fit but never stack floor mats. I mean maybe on top of the weather techs if they look alright but never on the driver seats floor. The hooks aren't designed for multiple mats.

If you took your Toyota to the dealership they would have removed that floormat without even asking you. It's still on every receipt I get from Toyota. Just says they checked the floor mats for free.

Like I said, I wasn't trying to pick on you, rather it's a good point and often overlooked by a lot of people. Not everyone realizes how dangerous an errant or ill-fitting floormat can be, let alone stacking them. :) Appreciate the effort.
 
There's a recall for a computer update. Sets priority to brake pedal if both gas amd brake pedals are pressed simultaneously. Additionally it clearly says in my husky liners install instructions not to install mats over existing one. Thankfully everything worked out. Thanks for spreading the word
 
Regardless of the comments pro & con it's always good to get safety info out.

Love my weather tech mats! Got them directly after getting my 4Runner. And they've served their purpose. From mud, to snow, to dirty dogs in the back.

I recently purchase an SR5 and the previous owner had all-weather mats over the carpeted mats. I thought it silly, but he was older and I figured it was similar to granny keeping the plastic on her sofa. I did notice the carpeted mat underneath was not secured to the hooks, so I did attach it, but I left the all-weather mat on top of it.

I have to double check the all-weather mat when I get the SR5 back from my mechanic, but I don't believe it has the appropriate holes for securing it to the hooks. If not, I'll be purchasing a new drivers mat.

I always assumed the hooks were a solution to a problem that didn't exist, and they were only installed to satiate shareholders, consumers, and the NHTSA.

No need to rub it in his face when people already pointed out his error in earlier posts. He's clearly not well versed in installing aftermarket parts for the 4R -
everyone starts out as newbies at one point or another. That's how people learn from their mistakes so they do not do it again. You're just being petty at this point with your post IMO.
