Weird Feeling When Slowing Down...

Hey Guys - I am new to this forum, I just purchased a 2003 V6 4Runner after selling my FJ. I have about 130k on the 4Runner and when i am slowing down at about 10-15 mph i get a weird rough feeling in the brake pedal. It's hard to describe but it feels like a light grinding that is repetitive and in-syc with the tire speed. So as i slow down the grinding comes and goes at a slower speed than when i was going faster...


Any ideas on what's going on? Is it the warped brake pads, transmission issue...

Sounds like warped brake pads to me. My buddy's GS300 used to do the same thing you're talking about (I think it's what you're talking about). Anyways, I would get a full inspection done on the vehicle if you haven't done that yet, as most folks do when they get a new vehicle. Make sure you use a place that specializes in Toyota. They should be able to help you find the source of the problem. Good luck!
 
Oddly enough, ship, my 01' GS430 is doing this exact same thing. It almost feels like you've got a bad wheel bearing or something. I have a full set of new oem rotor, pads, and shims sitting on my bench at home to install....if I could just find the time!
 
I've had this before. Dealer told me its warped brake rotors that sets off the electronic traction system.
 
I don't think i can feel it in the steering wheel, but i will pay attention to that. Warped rotors makes sense...

I will get that checked out, thanks for the help.

As usual I think the dealer is full of sh!t. I had/have warped rotors a couple times on my 04 and the traction control has never kicked in during a normal stop.

Get the brakes checked or check them yourself, you could be very close to a metal on metal situation with the rotor and backing plate of the pad.

in some instances it can happen. dont be so quick to judge the "dealer"...not all of them are "full of shit" as you put it. if you had a bad experiance with 1 dealer you shouldnt catogorize all dealers into that classification. some of us actually do have a small idea of what we're doin.

op....sounds like you're getting low on brakes...give them a look over and see whats going on there. could also have some rotor issue...warping/glazed etc which could potentially cause your concern.

My brake pads were not worn down when this occurred. After replacing the rotors the problem has not come back in 12,000 miles.
 
Similar issue...

I had the rotors re-surfaced about couple years ago (15-20K miles ago) because of the vibration on the steering when applying the brakes. The vibration is back which tells me the rotors are warped again. Most likely I cannot get the rotors re-surfaced for a second time. Is anybody else having the same issue? Any non-Toyota rotors I should get? Thanks.

your rotors should be able to be cut 2-3 times (sometimes more) before they get too thin and need replacement, depending ofcourse how much they shaved off the first time to get them straight. just FYI incase you wanna save yourself some dough and not have to buy rotors at this point.
