Weird Noise

I came out this morning and my 4runner was making a weird noise. It's coming from the engine compartment, I think its the starter trying to engage. Its a continuous click click. I disconnected the battery and naturally it stopped. Do I need a new starter or solenoid?

Where in the engine compartment?
If I recall correctly, the starter relay clicks when the battery is low. Not 'too' low, but just low enough the the relay can't engage fully, so it keeps popping open again.
Even if the key is in the off position.

It's located in the fuse/relay box by the battery. You can just listen to tell which one.

I made mine click by leaving the headlights on once. After a jump, and the battery recharging, it was good as new.

Normally I leave the headlights on all the time as they shut off by themselves after the ignition switch is turned off. I recently went out to the T4R and heard a clicking coming from the front of the engine bay with the key off and the battery was partially discharged. The clicking was coming from the headlight relay (opened the fuse box and put my finger on it - could feel it clicking....tick, tick, tick). I turned off the headlight switch and the clicking stopped. I replaced the relay and the problem was resolved.

You were right AntleredRuin. It was a relay in the fuse box. That and replacing some worn out ends on the battery wires causing the battery not to recharge properly, and its good as new. Thanks for the suggestion.
