Weird problem - RPM increase to 3k when brights turned on

He has a 2000 Limited and whenever he cuts his brights on the RPM's shoot up to around 3000 and it feels like it's struggling to up shift, even if he's got the cruise control on. Anybody got any ideas? I've never heard of anything like this.

Do you mean "puts" his brights on? I've never heard of anything like this, does the throttle move by itself? Or is this just a tach issue? Need a whole lot more information before anyone could begin to troubleshoot.

Bad wiring in the cruise control or it's possibly on it's way to fail? Has he tried using brights without cruise control on and seeing what it does? Is it only happening with the brights or when he turns the actual headlights on? Also is the truck actually increasing it's revs or is the tach just showing an increase? Is this happening at idle or while driving? Can you give us any more information like any aftermarket wiring like subs/amps, alarm, etc..

It's not just when it's on cruise, anytime he's driving and cuts his high beams on. It doesn't do it with the low beams. I haven't been in the truck while it happened but he said it's a noticeable increase, not just the tach going up. He's had an aftermarket amp and sub since he got it but this issue just started.

Is his amplifier hooked up to the alternator? Does it happen when he turns up his stereo? If neither of these are true, I doubt it's the aftermarket stereo. Looks like he'll have to chase some wires down and look for the issue.

I'll try to get up with him this weekend and figure it out. Thanks for giving us a place to start.

Does he have some funky off brand headlight bulbs installed or any LED bulbs in any of the exterior light assemblies? I had some strange RPM stuff start happening when I had LED brake/tail bulbs installed, but as soon as I replaced them with regular bulbs the problems disappeared and haven't returned. Might not be it, but you might check it just to rule it out.
