Weird running problem happening more often (updated)

I've posted before about my weird running problem.

Only when outside temp is COLD (engine temp doesn't matter)
Only after I top off the fuel tank, after about 20 miles runs fine the rest of the tank.

Check engine light comes on and runs like crap, sometimes stalling out when idling. Recently (last couple of weeks) It no longer has to be cold or topped off. Now it seems that if I can keep the throttle open wide it will run fine. The big problem is that wide open throttle is rarely an option while rock crawling or a good idea. Over the weekend it got to running so bad I completely lost forward power, and smelled really rich. The plug wires were so hot you couldn't touch them, and the ignition coil was hot to the touch (not just warm).

I've replaced the O2 sensor, did a head gasket, cat back, full tune-up, and correctly timed. I'm thinking either a fuel regulator or possibly the coil itself, is starting to have issues. Any ideas? Been fighting this for a long time.

It could be a bad ground or a loose wire somewhere in the harness, or where you least expect it. The fact that it's more persistent and happens without it being cold or topped off worries me, but also gives a clue to electrical or fuel delivery. Have you checked the fuel return lines to the tank? Or any of the EGR phoney bologna junk? The plug wires being ridiculously hot could've been from engine temp/internal engine temp, travelling up wards into the wire, or, from the coil/igniter downwards to the plugs.

Check engine light comes on, what code(s) are stored?

I would grab the FSM off of the sticky link and test your coil/igniter per the manual, also useful for checking CEL codes.

if its 3vze may be the knock sensor. could be clogged injectors too.

It's 22RE, last time I pulled codes I got a code for the TPS and for the AFM. Both test good, and I've tested them both several times. I've got a friend who is going to lend me the coil and AFM off of his old pickup for my next trail run. I'll let you know if anything changes. I'm going to look at the fuel lines and see if anything is fubar there. EGR is for the most part been completely bypassed. So I'm not really sure where to go.

I found a melted wire in the wheel well running from the EFI Relay to the AFM. I'm thinking that's likely my problem right now. Going wheeling again this weekend, I'll let you all know the results.
