Weird sound my 4Runner just started making

Did you record the sound while'driving from the cab?Where is the noise coming from the engine bay front or back of the motor underneath. Some info would be helpful. Take the belts off one at a time. check the flex plate inspection cover off check the flex plate for cracks. Go from there.

The sounds seems to be coming from the back of the instrument panel. First it started off as a gingling, like keys, but coming from inside the steering column. Then that sound started once I got my truck up to highway speed. I pulled over and had it towed to the dealership.

Unfortunately I’m not a DIYer like you guys. But if you have any idea it sure would be helpful. Please ask me anything else.

How about the blower fan? Maybe something was hitting it. That's an odd sound for a 3rd gen. If it super loud in the bell housing I suspect the flex plate cracking.

Wouldn't hurt to clean out the blower motor takes 10 minutes and it's easy peasy.

It sounds like HVAC , like the blower fan (like others have suggested). I did see in the video that there's a vent right under the steering column; if something is going on with the blower, the sound will follow down the ducting. Does it change (louder or softer) in direct relation to the fan speed that you set it too? Try the simplest things first, then get a bigger thumb-detector (hammer) as needed. Keep us posted.

Well, after driving it around on the street and on the highway the stealership couldn’t replicate the sound. They did a diagnostic and full work up, whatever the hell that entails, they found nothing wrong with my 4Runner. Driving home the truck ran great. Hopefully the sound doesn’t return. We will see.

Ok, we don’t know if it’s the fan or not. But if it only happens while you’re moving, and there’s a trickster in your life, I’ve heard of this before: someone will fasten a large thick wire tie to your driveshaft. I’ve never experienced it, but might sound like this? And maybe it wore away or broke off?
