weird thing happened to the brakes

This morning while driving to work I got some weird thing happened to my car. I was going downhill and was slowing down before the traffic light. But the road was kind of bumpy so the the car was jumping a bit (while I was pushing the break pedal). So, at some point I heard the noise (similar to ABS noise) and the braking efficiency suddenly increased a lot! I had to let the pedal go and try to break very carefully because the car was about to stop right there.. Luckily there were no cars behind me otherwise someone could hit me from the back.. crap.. When I finally stopped this thing with the brakes went away..
I just got this 4Runner (not yet used to drive it), it is 2007 with only 30K miles on it and I am confused what could cause this.. I don't think this is normal though..

It can be a little annoying at times but it is completely normal. The T4R has assisted braking. The vehicle senses hard braking (usually an emergency stop) and automatically provides extra brake force. Hills can sometimes confuse the system to think the braking is harder than it is, which triggers the system on. It will hold the brake pressure until you slow below 3mph or touch the gas.

Yea, it kinda got me the first time too haha. It gets worse when you put bigger tires on it too, the traction control can, at times, be a little much also. But I would rather it be too much than not enough, you know?

I actually thought that the brakes are not that good when I started driving my 4Runner.. I have replaced the brakes and did the bleeding of the system but it did not change much. Did you ever get this feeling like the car could brake better?

I haven't had that feeling too bad, I think the Sport Edition actually has bigger brakes than the other models, but not for sure about that

Yes, my 2008 behaves the same way, and I hate that. What a pain! My 2004, however, would let me control the brakes better.

A couple months ago, I was coming down the DVP one day at about 110, and some a$$ cut me off and I had to slam the brakes to avoid hitting him. Let me tell you, the truck slowed in ultra quick time. I am planning on upgrading the calipers and rotors as I am in need of a change (might have a seized piston in either one), but don't want to pay the big $$$ for the Stoptech big brake kit.

A couple months ago, I was coming down the DVP one day at about 110, and some a$$ cut me off and I had to slam the brakes to avoid hitting him. Let me tell you, the truck slowed in ultra quick time. I am planning on upgrading the calipers and rotors as I am in need of a change (might have a seized piston in either one), but don't want to pay the big $$$ for the Stoptech big brake kit.

yeah, this is not bad..
I am curious how this brake assist would perform on a slippery road..

I really hate it too. in my case it happen if I'm coming to a stop at a red light a down hill and go over a bump. at least it's not as annoying as the VSC.

Yeah, I'm a bit torn about all these safety bells and whistles. The first big snowfall after I got it I was all excited about doing doughnuts like I was 16 again in a nearby huge parking lot that's always empty. The VSC was a real debby downer on that little adventure. On the other hand, when I was driving down a snow covered back country road with my kids in the back and I went into a slide all the beeps started going off like I was in a jetfighter in a spin, and like magic the truck righted itself and carried on as though nothing happened.

I think I have experienced this too. Sometimes when braking hard into a tight 90 degree turn onto a different street I can feel the abs come on and help me slow down even though I would have been fine.

The Sport Edition was tested by Car and Driver back in 2005 and posted a 70-0 braking distance of 170 feet. At the time that was as good as a 3 series BMW could do. It has very good brakes. The Limited, at least in later years, had the same size rotors as the Sport.
