Weird whining noise when accelerating

Ok so..... i don't know where to start. But I'll try my best. Never had this noise before I swapped me elocker axle and front diff. Now my truck is id say heavy modified. It has a manual 5 speed swap, and now elocker axle swap. Along with matching front.

I've never experienced this noise before the diff swaps. But the donor truck had like 180k and the gear oil that came out was very clean. And no metal shavings.

My truck has been sitting for 2-3 months. Anyways. Truck sat for a long time. Being worked on. Just yesterday I got it all situated. Wheel alignment was the last thing. And after that. I started noticing a whining noise when accelerating. It's a very annoying noise. I doubt arecording would pick it up. It goes away when you let of the gas. Comes back when on the gas. Gets quieter at higher speeds. Most loudest at 20-40 mph. Different gear or 4wd don't make a difference.

I have my savage belly skidplatea installed. Without any washers. So i don't think if the transfercase/transmission is touching the skid plate would make a noise. It's not a rattling noise.

Definitely something in the drivetrain area. All fluids are new. Valvoline. And transmission is redline synthetic.

I'm going to bring it to my mechanic so he can put it on a lift and have someone put it in gear. Hopefully he can locate the noise.

I'm afraid it is either my front diff or rear.

Any suggestions ? And how much would it cost to fix gears in a diff

Like you said....sounds like one of the differentials.... take the drive shafts off one at a time and drive it. Will let you know if it is a diff. I had a bent pinion gear in a Trans Am that would whine under load. Just a process of elimination on something like that.

just crawled under my truck and found this.

looks to be leaking gear oil around the elocker. Not sure why. Or what would cause this. Im wondering if this is the cause of the whine noise. Tomorrow im bringing it to shop to get it in the air.

Is there a seal or gasket for the elocker?

what would cause a bent pinion gear?

Also any idea, how much it cost to rebuild a front or rear diff?

Extreme and or sudden heavy load....I bent mine by going from 5th to 1st at 60mph. I was racing a buddy who was trying to pass me. I had intended to hit 3rd. It didn't go so well when I dropped the clutch and mashed the gas. Instead of power spinning the wheels it compression locked them. LOL...dumb ass!

Repair is totally dependent on what is wrong. I did mine back when they had actually mechanics at service stations. I worked at a service station, and the mechanic fixed mine after work. My dad bought the beer and they did most of the work and I just helped. It requires some technical torque and play adjustments on the carrier bearing etc. Plus it is both the pinion and ring and bearings that needed replaced on mine.

Gotch ya. I have a friend who is a mechanic with told so I'm not worried. He has done rears before. I'm going to upload a video. It might be really hard to hear but you'll hear it.

I call that a hum or vibration more than a whine. I have not looked at a E Locker other than on pictures and internet stuff. Based on your pictures there are several gaskets and areas that seal. I would say the leak is not the cause of the sound your hearing. Was the rear totally cleaned when you got it because that leak was there before you got it I would gamble.

New U joint in rear correct? E locker work? Same sound in 4WD? Is there a certain speed you start to hear it or a speed range? Does it do it in reverse? Did you get it lifted and spin with tires off the ground? If you do this you should hopefully be able to zero in on the general area. No question it is something that engages against another part with pressure under load. If you cant isolate the area of sound it will help, or it could be a nightmare of trial and error.

What do you mean by new u joint ? I reused my old drive shafts so u joints were good. E locker works flawlessly. Yes, same sound in 4wd. I'd say 2nd gear it starts to sound. Not sure about reverse. I should be able to bring my truck today and put it in the air. I don't recal oil on in that area prior to sand blasting the axle. I do agree with you that the oil leak wouldn't cause that noise. I'll see what happens when I get it in the air.

Thanks

Thanks

There could be a fitment difference in the rear end side of the U-joint. It does not take much of a difference to create a vibration. U-joints are cheap and I personally would replace when changing any part on that U-joint. Just a thought and I hope you get it figured out as inexpensively and fast as possible.

I appreciate that and I will definitely look into that. I just not understand how a ujoints will cause that noise ? My old none elocker housing is the same as the elocker axle minus the expo
The elocker

Got it in the air today and in gear. SOUNDED LIKE POOP lol. Basically looks and sounds like the rear bearings inside. This is what the gear oil looked like. I filled it back up 4 times with motor oil, drove it around the parking lot to flush it out. Then put gear oil back in and it is still the same noise

I dont know what happened. When i got the axle form donor truck the old gear oil looked very very clean. I installed the axle, put new gear oil and drove it for a week and now this is where i stand at. Went off roading 2 times. Dont know how or what happened or what caused it.

Anyone know a good kit that includes the bearings and everything minus the GEARS

is this kit appropriate

I've got this same EXACT noise and haven't been able to pin it down yet. Hopefully you can figure it out and let us know what it was so that I can fix mine too.

Bearings inside. Jack up your rear, and try to move the flange on the third member that the driveshaft attaches. Mine has very very little play. But it has play. And my friend was listening with stethoscope. Gears look fine. If it was gears the truck wouldn't be moving.

So I guarantee you it's the bearings inside. Good thing it's not that expensive to fix it. Bad thing is you need to remove the third member and disassemble it.

I'll tell you where you are!!!! You got FU%%^& by someone intentionally. F'n POS like that are so frustrating. Sorry to hear you took it in the ass over some lying bastard.

I wouldn't point fingers, or say it was intentional. The story is. Me and my friend we split this truck $350 each. He got parts and I got the transmission, transfer case, front and rear diffs ( elocker ) i sold my old none elocker diffs for $$$$. Sold the transmission and transfer case for $$$$ form donor. And junked the rest of the body and got $$$$. Now, when I drained the donor elocker axle, the gear oil was clean! Then i got the axle sand blasted ( might of been here where i got F in the.....) Anyways, I put my old rear axles, because it had new OEM wheel bearings. Also put both sides new OEM oil seals. Got the truck ready, new gear oil whole nine yards. Week later after all done and said. I hear noise, and the gear oil looked like it was scooped up from the ground and poured back in.

Another theory. In the pic above where the elocker is leaking little bit of gear oil. I wasn't running the stock little plate that goes over the elocker motor. Thus didn't have that one long bolt installed. Now it looked like it was leaking a little gear oil out of there. But I really don't think that it was leaking gear oil through that bolt hole. Hard to tell and I just don't think so. But maybe because the bolt wasn't there. It did not seal properly the o-rings that the motor has. And maybe on my off-road test, which i went through a big ass water pit. Water go in ? But if water would of gotten in through that then I would say I would have seen a lot more gear oil leaking. Or maybe water seeped through around the elocker motor and into the housing? I will never know honestly. All i know is, the gears are good, and the bearings are shot. But maybe they are shot, even though they didn't break any teeth off. Now I am not a expert, but because everything in there everything is with in a thousand(s), maybe the bearing is or has worn out the gears. Such as, the "gear runout"? or the "backlash"? These things I don't know. As in I am not sure if the bad bearings could actually wear out the teeth on the gears that you will not be able to achieve Toyota's tolerance. I hope not, because gears are EXPENSIVE! and bearing kit is not that bad.

Sorry for a long post lol, bored!
