Welder Needed in DFW

I've got some sliders and panhard drop I need welded on my rig. I don't have a welder and have 0 experience with welding. Obviously I will come where ever you are. I can bring you a case of brews, help you wrench on your rig, or recommend a seedy Asian massage parlor as payment. (j/k about the last part) If none of that works I can always pay cash...just looking to use cash for mods if you understand what I'm saying.

two words HARBOR FREIGHT, go get your self a mig welder for about 100 bucks there and it will pay for it self in no time, make sure if you do get it crank the heat up to the max for better penetration
 
I have never even seen someone weld stuff before besides on TV or YouTube. Was this you before you bought yours? I want to learn, and all the stuff I have done to my rig so far was firsts for me.

What else would I need? Gloves? Helmet? That's about all I can think of.

Flux Wire Welder - 90 Amp
with 20% off they have going on right now, i remember they come with a hand held mask, a brush with a chipper.

all you need is glove and wires, but i would suggest you getting a helmet mask, get some scrape metal to practice first, i may not come out nice at first but you gotta learn somehow. watch some youtube videos on how to lay down a nice set of welds and setting for curtain kinda of metal, you'll be welding and making stuff in no time, did i mention its fun as hell. shop usually charges you 50-100 for 1 hour of welding. you save a lot by learning it yourself
 
make sure to buy flux cord wires, for flux cord you dont have to use gas, so just put the wire in feed it out of the tip, turn up the heat and wire speed and your ready to rock.
 
and make sure your family or friends don't looks at it when you weld, it will blind them for a day or two if they stare at it for too long, also wear long sleeve because you will get a sunburn

Couple things...

Buy a helmet. Way better then a held shield.

MIG is pretty easy, but practice first for sure.

To add to the "don't let family look at it" thing, I know a guy with a dog that is blind as a bat because the dog used to watch his master weld. Just something to keep in mind.
 
Umm, at that point pay a local guy, dont ever buy tools from harbor freight, thats like buying a Kia, you just dont do it.

Might want to use it to learn on then get something better for welding sliders!

HF has it place and welding isnt one of them. Dont waste your money of a HF welder. Find a a nice little 220 welder ( 220 if the power that you dryer/washer operate on) These can be found on CL for a great price. You can get them at Lowes/Home depot as well. Get yourself a tank and learn to weld with gas. Welding with flux has a place but it will also give you bad habits. You might invest a little more money upfront but you will become everybody's best friend and make your money back quickly. You can learn to weld in about 10 mins But it will take years of practice to make it look good and be a quality weld.

Next buy a welding book or video, this will give general direction about settings, steel types, wire types. Or enroll at the local community college/ adult school, and take some night classes.

Welding is easy its fitment that is hard. Clean your steel till it shines and watch your wind.

Project 1: Build a cart for your welder
Project 2: Build a little welding station on casters so you can move it around.
Project 3: Something for the wife or GF to make up for the fact you haven't left the garage in a month.
Project 4: Sliders

harbor tools has the a really good return policy, yes their stuff might not be top of the line but everything i bought from there from power tools to small stuff like torque wrench are still working.
 
also if you dont really care about nice looking welds, you can try the arc welder from HF same price but way stronger than the flux cord one

I appreciate the advice and the links. Welding with gas can be sort of intimidating if you have never even seen it being used before. Flux welding seems so easy. Just touch it to the spot you want to weld and BINGO.

I have looked into night classes but cannot find anyone. Only day classes and they want you to have an entire semester of class time before they let you touch equipment. No thanks.

Is the 220 Mig welder from HF no good?

I realize you get what you pay for but I can get this one for under $150 w/ a 3 year warranty. If it will get the job done I'm willing to do it. I think I would need to be taught in order to use gas so that I dont blow by a$$ up.:flamethrwoer2:

Guess I'm going to spend the night on YouTube learning. :cheers:

I have never bought power tools or anything that plugs in from HF but I but TONS of hand tools there and they are great. I swear by them. If you dont like them that's fine but for alot of us they are great. I used to feel the same way you did but that was before I ever actually tried them. I was ignorant. Since trying them and beating the hell out of some of these tool I couldn't be happier.

that one is great, no classes you take can teach you the stuff you learn by failing, the gas you use is nonflammable, and its only used to get rid of oxygen so the weld looks good and last longer, but flux cord work just as good but it gives a lot of splatter, 160 for the 110 is a good deal with 3 years warranty is worth it. hit your welds with a pick hammer if the welds crack then you need to turn up the heat. have a wire brush just for the splatter, and dont wear flip flops that **** hurts if it lands on your foot lol
