After reading this forum hours every day for a week and watching a 99 Highlander in PA get reduced $1000 dollars I went and bought it.

It's badass. It's quite clean. It needs an ELocker.

What It Needs:

  • Interior Detail - DONE
  • Tag Screws Missing (Dealer? or Autozone?)
  • New Keys (Dealer)
  • Cabin Air Filter - there is none, never mind.
  • Alarm/Remote Entry (Viper)
  • CD/MP3 Player (Multi CD Changers Available that fit in there?)
  • AC Probably needs recharging (it was marginally colder than without it but it was a little chilly out)
  • Fog lights both need replacing (hope it's just the bulbs)
  • Fuel door is sticky, it needs to be lubed (didn't notice til drive home).
  • Crickets (sound of) in the heater/AC blower motor
  • Driveline whine from up front (who knows? Is that maybe normal?)
  • Under carriage rust (POS 15, Eastwood, RustBullet etc?)
  • Left Rear Shock Outer sleeve nearly rusted through, good replacement for a little upgrade?

This is a great forum, I was able to read a ton of specific reasons why I wanted a 99 highlander.

  • Crickets (sound of) in the heater/AC blower motor Try graphite on the blower, it's 3 screws to drop the fan and it's below the glovebox
  • Driveline whine from up front (who knows? Is that maybe normal?) Lube driveshafts
  • Under carriage rust (POS 15, Eastwood, RustBullet etc?) POR-15
  • Left Rear Shock Outer sleeve nearly rusted through, good replacement for a little upgrade? Tokico TrekMasters will be stock replacemnt, Bilsteins are a nice upgrade if you don't mind an increase in stiffness

The front wheel drive based Highlander came in 2001. The 4Runner was the best selling Toyota SUV until the Highlander came out and the 4Runner has never top the charts since. Of course you may not think of the Highlander as a SUV.:shrug:

Actually, the 2001 Highlander helped me get my 2001 4Runner. When it came out, no one wanted a old body on frame, smaller 4Runner and the price dropped quite a bit. I actually test drive the Highlander and it was just not my cup of tea. I went with the old style 4Runner.:bluejump:

funny thing. my other cars are a 2006 Mitsu Lancer Evolution IX and a 2002 Subaru WRX modified to put out @ 300 HP at the wheels.

but right now I just wanna drive the 4Runner Highlander.

I like how much easier it will be to work on. gotta stop paying others to mod my cars, running out of money.

I haven't checked the timing belt sticker yet and I know I want to stay on top of that but what other things do you guys recommend I do to this manual transmission beast to be sure it keeps running right?

flush all fluids
what's the list of fluids?

transmission?
transfer case?
front diff?
rear diff?

There's no maintenance schedule past 120K so what do you guys do? has anyone created the "high mileage" maintenance schedule?

what about preventative maintenance to do along with timing belt?
water pump? thermostat?

how about cleaning the auto-antenna while it still works? the same with the back window?

anyone fix/adjust the poorly functioning drivers "door check" rather than replace it?

what about rust conversion on the under carriage? anyone done that? what about the running boards?

replacement leather shift knob? where to buy?

floor liners (husky or weathertech) I hear weather techs are $300 but you can get them (front and rear) for $187 delivered.

what did I miss?

I think I'd like to restore this thing to like new and I don't think it would need very much considering the body is near perfect.
 
Turned around and traded the 3 owner black one with 145000 miles for a jade mica with 28000 fewer miles and a crap ton less rust.

and found this in the glove box:
