Well it happened again......

For the second time now my spider gears decided to let go out on the trail. Not entirely sure how it is happening but all I know is it sucks. Bit of interesting information however, I called Toyota because I wasn't sure if the gear ratio made a difference in the spider gears and he said they only have one part number so I am under the assumption that they are all the same... well I will give you an update tomorrow sometime when I figure it out. Wish me luck.

It's for the front. I knew it was a 4:30 but I wondered if that had anything to do with the spider gears and it doesn't appear to make any difference. Made me pretty happy because there is three 3rd gens in my local bone yard so my odds of finding what I need are pretty high.

Maybe it is time to run an ARB. They eliminate the differential as being a weak point....then you will just snap CV's. Which are more manageable.

can you give a bit more detail about how this happened?

Blowing a front when doing reasonable 4WD activities is not that common

I've done it, but I know it was my own fault...blowing a front diff and NOT a CV is hard to do...and two in a row is just silly...I'd say it's time to examine your driving style

I am not entirely certain how this happened again. I was doing the same trails as I always have when it took the teeth off of the smaller spiders. Anyone use full synthetic up front? I'm thinking this may keep the temperature down a bit as it does stay in the high 80's and low 90's at night here. This has occured with and without my lift now so I can't blame the larger tires. Perhaps it is time for a locker.....

A backstory to it is me and some wheeling buddies were out in our usual trails and I was climbing a fairly small rock face that I've done dozens of times. It's a straight shot with little to no turning needed and at the very top I heard the dreaded sound of gears being mangled. Backed down and limped it home. It was a damn hot night and the drive to it is down a dried river bed that is about 4 to 5 miles long.

That sucks Jeremy,

Ive done the same thing. Not sure what makes the diff go before the CV, but it sucks.

I may know a local guy that has a 4.30 front diff for cheapish, maybe. Ill let you know.

Don't worry about it Jim. I went to U-Pull on Saturday and they had three third gens ripe for the picking so I picked up a front carrier with 4:10's and I am going to just pull the ring gear off of it and use my 4:30 ring. My carrier took quite the beating getting it back out of the Puerco and has some really good chunks taken out of it. U-Pull charged me $30 and it took me 30 minutes to get the front diff out so it hasn't been all too bad I suppose.

Alright so my next question is backlash. I did a little bit of research on it and I can't find anything too specific. Anyone know of any comprehensive links to set the backlash on a front diff?
