well this is embarrassing - testing 4lo

I bought my 2008 sport edition in April with 30,000 miles. It now has 35,xxx and I would like to check the 4lo before the warranty is up and I move out west for ski season. What is the best way to go about this/what are some things I should look for?

I've rarely driven off road. Never in this car. I assume I should go somewhere with gravel, dirt, or grass. Once I put it into 4lo, how can I tell if it's working or not?

A few months ago, I received my car back from my stereo installer with the car in 4lo. There were a few lights on the dash, I think one was indicating that the differential wasn't locked (there was an "x"), there was also an icon I believe with the "slippery" marks in front of the tires. As I recall, pressing the buttons to the left of the steering wheel didn't affect the lights as I thought it should. I did as the manual indicated to get it back into high gear - selected the proper setting and idled slowly forward. 10-20 feet later, both times I had to do this, there was a loud "thud" and I was back in gear.

Anything sound off here? If not, how can I test this so I can have any massive repair done under warranty?

I would be SUPER PISSED if I got my truck back from a shop and I found it in 4lo! I'm sorry that happened to you. as far as testing out your 4lo, I'm sure others on here can better advise than me, I'd find some sand, and maybe bring a friend. good luck with it.

Dry pavement is fine that due to the center diff. (That's one of the many really cool things about a 4th gen. I use 4lo at the boat ramp all the time, no binding issues because the center diff works just like it does in 4hi.) Put the vehicle in 4hi the 'normal' way. That means 4hi with no flashing lights. Stop, place it N, select 4lo. When the lights finish flashing you're good to go. When going 4lo to 4hi stop, place it N and select 4hi. Once the lights stabilize (no flashing) place it D and drive away... In all tests beeps or flashing lights indicate mismatched switch to condition.

Anything sound off here? All sounds normal. You should do this 4lo drill monthly IMHO. Because it's ok to do on dry pavement it's pretty easy. The center-diff lock gets cycled as you transition from 2hi-4hi-2hi. No need to exercise that switch just use 4hi for a few miles/month and cycle in out of 4lo. No need to drive more than a few feet in 4lo. If not, how can I test this so I can have any massive repair done under warranty?
