Went in today for a quick service at my favorite shop, and as I'm waiting for it to get finished, one of the service advisors came back in (mine had left for the day) and she tells me that in while starting the adjustment on the emergency brake, the technician found that both axle seals were "puking".

Welp, time to open up the piggy bank...

Yep, call around to local machine shops for the best pricing. I have now done all 4 of my wheel bearings/seals. I have paid a grand total of $220 for all 4 wheel bearings (and upper ball joints too) for machine work. I could only guess the dealer would charge well over $2000 for this labor.

it is really easy to replace the seals. The bearings are the paint in the ass
 
The unfortunate thing about all of this is that I literally went in because I am heading out of town and needed to get an oil change because it hadn't been done in a while, and I asked them to look at adjusting the E-brake because it seemed stiff.

And while I have no problem getting dirty, I trust these guys when they say if it's been leaking like it has been, the rear end could lock up at any time. So, I'm not super happy about spending the money on it for something that I could do for a couple hundred bucks and a couple hours, but I don't have an issue doing it.

[MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I are working on editing the axle seal videos right now. Very soon, the 3rd Gen community will have 3 comprehensive videos to use for this repair. One for Non-ABS rearends, one for ABS rearends and a 3rd that will show other options of doing the presswork.

OP, if you can wait, we will most likely have these videos out by the end of the week. If you can't wait, at the very least, follow the instructions in the link provided above and pull your own axles and find a machine shop that knows what they're doing.

Yeah, do them yourself and you'll save lots of $$$.

I think they're less than $10/seal.

Easier said than done. I don't really feel like typing out all the reasons why it's a bad idea to just replace the seals but anyone who has researched this job knows it's not just a simple replacement of the axle seals to remedy this.

OP, if you read Dr. Coffee's thread, you'll understand what I just said.
 
If you have some access to a welder and steel. You can make a puller that you bolt to the rear axle and just press he bearing right of. "If"!

I'm probably really ignorant here but can't you refill the dif with more fluid to leak and do the seals and bearings when you return? I've heard a clogged breather is a leading cause of leaky seals so replace that. I think I paid $8 for a Toyota one. At any rate don't let a Toyota dealer do the work. $$.

The problem there is that if he has diff oil all over his drum brakes he might not be able to stop.

But yea, when I replace my breather my leak stopped.
