Went on vacation and now I have an issue.

I just finished a 10 day cross country vacation where we drove from Virginia to Branson, Missouri to see family. Total miles driven was 2,658 miles there and back. The 4Runner did great and I averaged 23.2 miles per gallon over my entire trip. Very impressed with the truck overall.

After spending over 40 hours behind the wheel I noticed that after coming to a stop at a red light or a stop sign, when I remove my foot from the brake to accelerate, there seems to be a slight bump that you can feel. Since my wife drives the 4Runner daily, I had not had enough time behind the wheel to experience the issue. It won't do it every time but I seem to be noticing it more often now.

I did some research via the "Google Machine" and the following showed up as possible issues:

2: Poorly greased zerks on the drive shaft.

I have 43,000 on the odometer so I need to go see the dealership and hope they can reproduce my symptoms and fix my issue.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and had a dealership not work with you if you are under the 5yr/60,000 mile warranty?

Don't rule out a loose brake caliper.

Greasing the zerk fittings is easy and a short job you can do yourself. that may save the agony of spending time at the dealer. I had a clunk upon initial acceleration and greasing the driveshaft components took care of it.

This is the most likely cause. Most dealerships don't grease anything unless you ask specifically for it (you better check afterward, too).

You'll swear that someone has bumped you from behind.

It won't do it every time but I seem to be noticing it more often now.

I found that harder stops seemed to increase the problem.

In my experience, this only temporarily 'fixed' it.

I'm at 47,000 and the issue has never returned. I DO make certain that they lube the DS at OCI's.

I am at 43,200 and I might take it in to see what they say. Just need to find a day where the wife can live without the 4Runner for a day.

just setup an appt. and the night before have some crazy tarzan hanging from the chandelier ape sex so its makes it hurt to walk to the 4runner.

problem solved, she doesn't want to go out and you get the 4runner checked out.

I had the bump around 44k. First dealer couldn't reproduce the symptom when I was in for an oil change, BUT it was a Saturday and they were already resistant to do my oil change.

Next dealer jumped on the warranty work. I left it overnight and had it back with a new driveshaft by 10am the next day.

I entertained greasing it/playing with it to get rid of the sound- but I figured I paid for a warranty and since they already had the bulletin out- I might as well just have the dealer do it.

TSB-Drive Shaft Replacement

Drive shaft issues have been longstanding for Toyotas and they have updated the rear drive shaft and replace as the fix. Good Luck with it
