went to pick up 4runner from dealer but....

tonight i went to pick up my new to me 4runner. it is a 2006 4runner 4x4 with 78k miles it is a new england car in pretty great shape im happy with the way it looks and drives

one issue is that when i turned the wheel all the way to the left it clunks a little bit. i refused to pay for the car until this was resolved they said it would be good by tomorow afternoon

any ideas of what this could be and what i should keep my eye out for

How bad is the clunk? Like just a soft clunk in the steering shaft/steering column area, or a noticeable clunk in the suspension?

when i went to test drive the car first it was a very noticeable clunk and the dealer said it was probably ball joints and it had not been serviced yet by their techs and now it is alot lighter but still noticeable but only at full crank and too the left side

Sway bar bushings?but New England area car be carefull and look real close at under side of car,ie frame for rust,rust search this forums lots of post on rust

i hope they dont just grease things and get it to stop making the noise untill i take the car

i plannon having my mechanic look at it after i take it home but its tough to get the dealership to work on things after you fork over the money

lets hope they take care of it and it isnt a recurring issue that i need to deal with

I would have a mechanic look it over, because they will most likely just grease it to go away... as disgusting as it is, its much cheaper than forking over a few hundred dollars.

yes i know the games they play and i am friendly with my mechanic so he will look it over and not try and gouge me. We do have the lemmon law in mass so if it is safety related they need t fix it

i am just hopping after spending a large chunk of money i get a good vehicle and it wont nickel and dime me

i got rid of my audi because of that reason

Lemon laws generally apply to new cars. That's why most used cars always have an "As Is" disclaimer.

I'm assuming it's similar to what we have in NY for used cars. Depending on the mileage, you get a set time of coverage. Mine was 30 days/1,000 miles.

don't be too paranoid about it. only grease will fix that. during the time you turn the wheel all the way to the left or right, there's a metal to metal stopper that sometimes grind and if not greased, will make the noise. if you are driving it straight and you don't hear anything, nothing is wrong with your suspension. Looks to me it's a good buy.

Days or 2500 miles for mass

I have done research it's either a bushing or that bump stop that is the issue. It's not clunking as I turn it's only at the max turn which makes me think it isn't an axle issue.

The car is mint other than this issue with dark grey or black leather. And I got it for 15k so
I'm pretty pumped with the price. Just trying to get the most perfect car for the money

Probably the steering stops. Throw some grease on them and see if that helps. My F150 did this same thing really bad after I lifted it. Grease really helped.

Have your mechanic double check your ball joints. From many past experiences, holding the wheel at full turn going to the right (clockwise) and getting a clunk, it is a sign you could have a worn lower left ball joint.

Opposite turn (counter clockwise) noise indicates opposite side (right) lower ball joint.

Sway bar end links and sway bar mount bushings are common wear items and easy/inexpensive.

The dealer said they are working on if and I should be all set Tomorow when they get parts in I will also have my mechanic take a look next week and double check the work they did.

I am very impressed with this forum. Everyone has been helpful and I havnt even picked the car up yet. I like to work on my car myself but I am still lest I g. Hopefully this forum can help me out in the future

check the steering stops. Mine only does it at full lock. Go full lock, the back off a 1/2 turn, if it goes away it is likely the steering stop. Otherwise, check the usual suspects, ball joints, CV joints....
