Were 16" Wheels an Option off the Lot?

Hello, all! I am getting ready to buy new tires and currently have 265 70 R16s. When searching for tires I found that if I search by make, model and year the only standard option given for a non-limited (as mine is) is the 225 75 R15 size series.

So, was the upgraded size an option off the lot or was this purely an aftermarket working by the previous owner? I plan on sticking with what I have now as it rides very well, gets "great" gas mileage and is compliant with the Tundra upgrade (which I mean to do soon) but I was just curious about such.

The answer may be year dependent. I think I see you have a 2000. I have a 2001 and am the only owner. I think the base SR5 in 2000 had 15 as stock but know that there were ways to get 16 off the lot. For 2001 I think I got the 16" as part of 4WD but I remember my neighbor buying a brand new 2000 with the sport package and also getting 16" tires.

16s were optional on 4-cylinders and SR5s in the U.S. Both steel and alloy 16s were available.

The two independent Toyota distributors sometimes did their own thing with port-installed options. Southeast Toyota and Gulf States Toyota are the distributors.

All 4X4 Limited and Sports came with 16's, the NON 4X4 Limited, Sports, SR5 and base models came with 15's and could be upgraded to 16's, until 2002 when all T4Rs came with 16's

My 02 was suppose to have 15" rims until it was turned into a sport by factory.

Thank you very much, everybody! I am glad I ended up with the 16s. Makes thing much easier for the Tundra upgrade as well as overall aesthetics in my opinion. Looking at getting the Firestone Destination A/T.
