Hi all,
About six weeks ago I bought a 2000 4Runner (V6, 4x4, 5-speed manual) with 226,000 miles. Notwithstanding its age and mileage, it's in good shape. One thing I noticed when I was evaluating the car was evidence of a leak somewhere on the transfer case, but there was no fluid dripping onto the ground.
To this day there is no dripping on the ground, but the transfer case has a wet look and it seems as if the leak originated on the top and flowed downwards covering most of the transfer case.
Again, in my garage, there has not been any fluid dripped onto the ground. I have already drained and filled the transfer case with fresh Redline gear oil.
Is this something I need to worry about? And is it possible there's a leak only in the winter when 4-wheel drive (transfer case) is more likely to be used?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
