What 3rd Gen years & models had Supercharger's?

Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me what 3rd Gen years & models had Supercharger's?

Will anyone please let me know how many miles they got out of their supercharged T4R before having to do major work such as a head gasket?

How many miles are the 3rd gen supercharger's lasting without major work in the 3rd gen please?

I live in Colorado, and I am know working in the mountains - (Estes Park) and my old 1998 SR5 V6 with 268K miles (without a supercharger) is lacking power going up the mountains. I am just starting to anticipate a engine failure and if I want to replace my T4R with a super charged one before it fails. But it is my belief that normally aspirated engines last longer than those that aren't (those with supercharger's or turbo charger's).

Thanks guys - you all are awesome!

Correct, not a single 3rd gen 4Runner shipped from the factory with a supercharger. They could be added at the dealership on a brand new vehicle, but you'll find that MOST of the supercharged 4runners out there weren't supercharged until after they were owned by someone.

Therefore: you could technically find a newer (black) supercharger on a 1996 4runner. And you could also find an older (gray) supercharger on a 2002. You will simply have to look for a supercharged 4runner...you can't really narrow it down any more than that. I will say that if you want one with a blower, try to get one with the newer unit, the black one. It's much easier to service.

Thank you gentlemen, you are all so helpful. I am always surprised how freely people on this site take time out of there day to share a wealth of info with one another. Thank you all VERY much.

Is there any major difference in 2nd and 1st gen sc??

can someone break it down for me bc

1st gens need to be taken off to change the oil. 1st gen needs to be taken off to replace nose cone. 1st gen are fugly.

2nd gen doesnt need to be taken off to change oil. 2nd gen doesnt need to be taken off to replace nose cone. 2nd gen are sexy.

I'll be putting together a build thread soon. I do agree that the 2nd gen chargers are sweet looking. But internally they are identical as far as operation. And the nose cone can be removed without removing the supercharger but it isn't as easy as the 2nd gen. On the other hand 1st gen chargers can be found for a lot less and rebuilt yourself (minus rotor coating) for about $100. Just saying:D

I dont think I would ever have the BA11$ to modify a super charger in anyway.....

Those of you that have super chargers or turbo chargers - Would you be kind enough to share how you shopped for your super charger / how much you paid for it / what if anything you would do differently if you did again please? Obviously I am aware of ebay and craigs list but I am not educated on brands, how to tell if it is a bonifide "TRD" charger or what are fair prices for a used one.

The casting right on the top says TRD.

The blower itself is an Eaton I believe. The newer ones the blower is a single piece design, whereas the old grey ones are a cast intake with the Eaton blower bolted to it.

You'll have to search out the positives and negatives of both systems. When going forced injection you should ALWAYS do your homework regarding fueling too.

yes both 1st gen and 2nd gen superchargers are Eaton M62's which means that they will both will compress the same amount of air so the real differences become looks and ease of maintenance and cost. The Looks go to the black charger for sure but the grey are nice if painted another color. Ease of Maintenance once again goes to the Black Charger but only a little since they should not need service but every 80-100k but changing the oil in the nose cone more often will be good. Then there is price and if your patient then you can find both gen chargers for a good deal. I totally agree that if you want to get the maximum out of your supercharger then some form of fuel management whether that is URD 7th injector setup. or something else you want fuel management.
