Say for a nice 2012 with 80k miles. Dealer adds price them WAY more than reasonable, so offering 20% less make sense?

Here is reference point for you.

Anywhere less than 28 should be good, offering less than 25 is pointless as they will get more selling at the auction.

Is that really true? Why is book so much less? I want to sell my 2011 4x4 heated leather sunroof sliding tray 80k and was hoping to get 20,000. Can I really get much more???

No way am I paying over $22k on a 11 or 12. Sure, there are used ones sitting on the lots for $28k for months on end, but not going to bite. Used cars have higher mark up than new.

Do what you want but the prices are set because... people will pay them. Maybe not you but the guy behind you will. You have to pay to play. You might luck out but used prices are what they are for a reason. People are willing to pay that price.

I just bought an '08 V6 with 86k on it for $17,700. They wouldn't budge, this was $300 less than asking and done over the course of a few days and they still held firm. Overall, I'm pretty happy, but like you, I thought I could get away for cheaper...nope.

You're fooling yourself if you think you're getting that kind of deal at a Toyota Dealership. Most of those '11~12 could still be potentially "Certified Pre-Owned" which will drive the price up.

Additionally you're talking about a Toyota 4Runner, the Toyota Truck Tax is an unfortunate thing and means you're paying extra simply because it is a Toyota 4Runner.

KBB is not a metric Dealerships use for trade-in value or pricing, they go off auction pricing and another program I forget that is more realistic of what their "wholesale" price is. You won't get a vehicle for that price because they'd rather just auction it off than sell it to you for that amount.

If you want a "deal" then you're gonna have to adjust your expectations or scour private sales for someone who's either too nice or uninformed of what their vehicle is worth.

As a former new vehicle dealer I would encourage you to first let them understand that you are a serious and capable buyer, then make them any offer you want regardless of how ridiculous it sounds. You never know what may happen.

20 you`d easily get at Carmax. They offered 29 for 2012 with 40K
How they can profit from it is unknown.

22K for a nice '12 with 80k? Not sure whats going on in Chicago, but here in CO you aint even close. Between the model years of 2011 and 2012 I found a SR5 with 155k for $19k and a Limited with 107k for $26k (also a SR5 with 23k for....$32k whhhhhhaa lol). My point being Toyota tax is high mainly because these vehicles last. If they didn't, the resale value would plummet....like certain other manufactures. This also makes it very hard to get a "deal" when buying new. Ford dealerships offer $5k+ customer cash and 0% interest on trucks all the time. Never gonna see customer cash on a 4Runner, and maby if the stars and moon align just right you may get 0% financing. Were I you, the 4th gen would be calling my name.

I was recently looking at 4runner on carmax, because I want a 2nd. They had used versions of my 4R for sale for more than I recently paid new.

Used 4R market is still difficult for my brain to comprehend sometimes. Supply and demand I guess

I started out looking used (2-3 years old) to save some $$, after 6 months of off and on searching I decided to just go new. Paid invoice and 0%/36months sealed the deal. Worked out being less than many of the used ones I looked at.

I was looking off and on for a year for a used Trail...the Toyota Truck Tax is unbelievable until you witness it...used 4Runners that I thought would sit for months at crazy prices (or at least I thought were crazy) would sell within a couple weeks or even days sometimes. The dealers within a 200 mile radius wouldn't budge on used 4Runner prices. I gave up finally and bought a new '16 Trail and I'm loving it.

I recently traded in my 03 Sport v8 with 273,000 miles--only because an ac repair was going to cost $2100, engine ran great. Bought a 2010 Limited with 138000 miles (yeah, I know, that's a lot of miles) for $20,000 all in--taxes, tags, dealer prep, etc. Truck is loaded with whatever was available as options when new. Original sticker in glove compartment showed $42,000. New pads and calipers and new shocks (XREAS still working). Tires with about 8000 miles on them. No accidents. One owner who according to Carfax and dealer records did 10k, 20k, 30k, 40k check ups. You get the picture, truck seems clean and well maintained.
I've got my fingers crossed, but would never think of buying a car with those miles if I hadn't had such good luck with my other 4Runner. I don't know if $20000 was great, but I'm not feeling too bad for now.

Back when we bought ours new in '12 we originally started looking at used as well. We got our '12 SR5 premium for 36k. Used ones with same options were the same price with 40-50k miles on them. Ludicrous the value these things keep. Had to finance ours, but have never been upside down on our loan. Quite comforting honestly.

my brain couldn't compute so we just put deposit on a new one.

When i bought my first 4runner in Nov 2014, I went to the dealership to buy a used one and the price was $5000 more then the new one I left with.

That one got totaled after 19 months, I got paid $238 more then what I paid for it new.

That alone made me go back and buy another one.
