What can my V6 pull? Help!

Hi guys.

I am wondering what I can tow with my V6.

I need a to hook up to a trailor this wknd to move a friend, and I am concerned to pull this thing. I believe it is 12' long.

What are your recommendations? What is the tongue weight, etc?

i have a 14ft utility trailer that i use 2 days a week to haul debris to the dump so the trailer is roughly 1250lbs and i haul sometimes up to 2tons with no issues what so ever so your golden!

I dont remember specifics but in your owners manual on page 400 is the weight capacities, I was just looking at it the other day.
(well page 400 for 2005, just check the specifications, should be last chapter before index)

I agree, read your manual. Find your engine option, and there should be a tow rating listed.

As for Toyota.com, they say a 2WD SR5 (you didn't say 2 or 4WD) with the 4.0L six is "rated" to 5000lbs. I presume that to be a gross rating: trailer + payload should be <= 5000 lbs.

Sounds about right, my V8 4WD is rated at 7000 lbs. I towed a 4800lb load with it last weekend, about 70 miles round trip, and it performed just fine - but cost me some MPG of course.

If your estimated total load is going to be over 500-750 lbs, I'd definitely follow the general rule of towing in Drive and NOT tow in Overdrive. Your transmission will thank you.

what type of mpgs were u getting? i'm curious as to the difference in fuel economy towing similar loads with a smaller engine. will the v8 be more efficient in that situation?

I used my '04 V6 4WD to move a 6'x12' U-Haul trailer this summer... drove from MI to SC without any problems at all, save for a hit on the MPG. Normally I get ~22 MPG with pure highway driving; I averaged about 16 for the trip. Not too bad if you ask me. I'm not sure how the V8 would do, but I think it wouldn't take as big a hit towing a large load like that.
