What condition 4runner for this price?

I have just recently considered a 4runner as my first car. What can I get for $5000-$6000?

Look for something in the 96-02 (3rd gen) year range, but you may have to go earlier for that kind of money.

Yeah the 3rd generation is the kind I like. I have seen people asking 8-12k for their 4runners. I don't know how some people justify that much money for a vehicle that is 10+ years old and has at least 200000kms on the clock lol

If you are looking for a 3rd Gen in that price range, you might be realistically looking at a base model 4 cylinder or something with a salvage title. I personally wouldn't mind buying a newer/better trim model with a salvage title if I knew I was planning on keeping it til it dies, and after a pre-purchase inspection.

At least in southern California, there are plenty of 2wd and/or 4cyl models to be had for under $6000 non-salvaged. There are even a few 4wd at that price, but you have to be willing to compromise on mileage or appearance.

I would avoid salvage titles - some insurance companies won't touch them, and anyone who will will give you less coverage.

Salvaged Title

I know quite a few people that buy salvage title vehicles. As long as you know what happened in the wreck, you can save a ton of money. I always thought I would never touch one that was in a wreck, but I did my homework on mine. Inspected closely, made sure everything was straight, and took the plunge. I am very happy with it so far. Just remember there is hardly any resale value. But if you get it cheap, and you plan on driving for many years, who cares.:shrug:

I bought my 99 V6 SR5 2X4 non-salvaged for $5200 with 159,000 miles. Not in perfect condition but only a few scratches. And that price was from a dealer! And my girlfriends 2000 highlander edition was $6000. There are deals to be found, just take your time and look daily!

Sadly being a Canadian also I know your dollar won't stretch as far here as it seems to for our American neighbours....

But I can say about a year and a half ago I sold my 96 full load SR5 with 265K on it for $5K (the same one in my avatar) (thinking back I really gave it away). Back bumper had rusted through like most around here and starter contacts were gone but other than that still ran like a top. I've regretted that decision many times since.

Keep your eyes out, you'll find something. Just might take a bit. I'd keep your eyes on some car dealers in your area, at that age if they get one on trade they'll most likely send them to auction. If you get in there first you might find a deal, just ask them to inspect it as part of the deal to make sure all is good with it first.

I bought my 98' SR5 w/ 142,000 miles on it about a year and 1/2 ago in pristine condition for $5,100. Hell of a deal but it's possible... Just gotta look hard for a while

You can get a decent truck for that, i got my 97 off auction needing a rear diff for $1850, and i know of other people paying $3k for theirs only needing a head gasket... Stuff like that, if you find one that needs minor work you can save some money...
