What did everyone pay for their 4th gen?

Picked up a clean '05 SR5 V6 with 119k last week for $10k.
Steal around the PNW considering '99s with twice the miles are listed for the same price.

Just left 3rd gen for a 4th gen!

Just this weekend, I found a 2007 Sport V6 with 107,000 miles for $9500, paid $9200. Super steal. Tires were shot, so that was $750 more I had to spend this morning.

In turn, sold my 98 Limited with 118,000 for $8,000 (I paid $6700 for it 5 years ago). Nearly an even swap. Buy low, sell high.

woah, lots of Virginia people. I just got mine in November and paid $12k for a 2009 V6 Sr5 with 150k miles. I sold my rusty frame 2000 Tacoma Sr5 :(

I've been browsing this site since November and have been slowly buying parts to upgrade my suspension. Cheers!

Paid 7800 for 2004 SR5 V8 4x4 Shadow Gray with 160k miles. Owned by toyota mechanic, changed front pass axle, changed seals on transfer case, changed all links and bushings, did timing belt and spark plugs and radiator flush at 144k, New belts and pulleys 155k.

basically he did all the stuff i would have probably done myself already. So i paid him a little more for it. And its the v8 so the milage didn't mean much to me.

Got it in Chicago. Some rust, not terrible. Ground a lot off, painted it. Eh, will see how long it lasts.

Then i put some mods on.

I hear ya. Prices here in the PNW (I’m in WA) are insane for 4R’s. I got mine for literally the same price. 04 SR5 V6 with 111k for $10k (all the fees included). You got a good deal!

Almost a year later with mine, I have not been disappointed at all. My 2wd 4R has proved itself worthy nonetheless. Congrats on the new rig! Enjoy it!

Still looking in the Virginia area!!!...but will travel...

I bought my 4Runner from this used car dealer:

https://www.hymanwholesale.com/used-cars-ashland-va?page=3

They're in Ashland, a suburb north of Richmond, VA. , and they often have several 4Runners for sale, including now. All of their cars are also on ebay, but you can call them up and negotiate a purchase price if you're serious -- (or I guess, maybe if you're even just curious!).

Right now their listings show:

I arranged everything over the phone, :phone:
and agreed to buy it sight-unseen, subject to a test drive (maybe dumb, maybe not), then I took Amtrak down there, and they picked me up at the station.

I took maybe a 15 minute test drive alone with the truck, and then came back, gave them a check, and signed paperwork for bank financing on the remainder of the purchase price. I got 5 yrs at 3.25% via a bank loan that they arranged. The only "fee" that they charged was $99 for their effort in registering the truck with the DMV and getting me tags.

Overall, I was very pleased. The truck needed new tires, the shocks were leaking, the brakes pulled, and the sway bar end links were worn out -- all of these items I missed on my test drive, so I had to spend more money to replace them all-- but I upgraded while I was at it! I say, mea culpa -- I didn't ask about those items, or if there were any issues with the truck, and I didn't notice them in the excitement of my test drive, and being awed by beauty of the truck -- so I can't say that I was duped!. (The timing belt & water pump WERE done, and the truck IS extra clean, and very solid).

There were a few other minor issues with the truck that I discovered later -- some minor damage to the roof rack, and a couple of small problems, but I contacted the dealer and they were very stand-up about it all -- including offering to take the truck back and refund all of my money if that's what I wanted.

I loved the truck, so I said no, asked them if I could get the issues fixed for a reasonable price would they reimburse me. We agreed. I got the issues addressed, and they sent me a check. Nothing serious. It was and is a super-clean truck, and I love it.

As for pricing, I believe that there are few "bargains" at dealers -- at least compared to what you can get from a private seller if you're patient and persistent-- but I was happy with the price I paid, and I've been *thrilled* with my 4Runner. :lookout:

Hope this helps, especially for those searching in or around Virginia. :reddance:

BTW, I have no affiliation with the dealer, I'm just sharing my experience with them, and letting people know that they try to maintain a decent inventory of used 4Rs for sale.

Someone ended up beating me to an 07 V8 SR5 for $9,000 with only ~90k miles, that was a steal.
Maybe a steal, maybe not... I just picked up an '06 w/ 95k for 11.4k last week. Thought I made out alright until I started noticing undisclosed issues. It's at the shop atm...

2006 Sport 4WD, V8, 110K miles, one owner (65 year old doctor bought new in 05), very clean rig, paid $9500 plus $500 TT&L. It is all stock, not even window tint. Only downside is TB has not been changed. I read of the Secondary Air Pump, how big of a problem is it really? Is it more of an issue in northern states where temps are lower?

Also, has anyone went from sport brakes to the smaller calipers? I have a set of 2016-2017 Tacoma 16" wheels and brand new BFG AT tires (like 3000 miles) that I had on a 95 4Runner I sold. I feel like I would be money ahead to switch the brakes, as opposed to selling these new wheels and tires.

Sorry to hear that.

Situations like this is a perfect reminder for those who are interested in purchasing a vehicle whether it's a Toyota or other brands. Always have the seller take it to a shop of your choice and have them do a pre-purchase inspection. At that point you should go over the list of what may need to be corrected with the seller and determine pricing from there. You have to include factors such as existing issues that'd need to be fixed after sale into the final price so it's "fair and square where everyone comes out on top".

If the seller refuses to take it to a shop of your choice because of PPI fees...then you should walk away from the transaction. To be fair the buyer could cover PPI fees if the report did not look good enough to be sold. If the report is a positive one where both parties advance toward pricing phase then the PPI fee must be included in sales price (seller takes a monetary loss on PPI fees via final price)

That is what I did with a benz dealership in MD. I live in VA and reached out to the benz dealer. I told them I'd like for it to be inspected at a Toyota dealer. They declined at first saying 'we have quality mechanics here at Benz where we trust these guys.' I told them I understood that but I'd prefer a Toyota dealer to inspect the 4Runner and I would not want to drive 1.5hr just to see the report issued by the benz dealership themselves. They knew I was a serious buyer so they eventually agreed on dropping it off at the dealer.

I drove up to MD and went to Toyota dealer. Service adviser came up to me and gave me the report. I looked at it and I wasn't happy with it. I called the sales agent and told him a bunch of issues needing to be corrected. I included my counter-offer which was substantially lower than what they were asking for just to see if they'd bite.

The sales agent immediately came to the Toyota dealership with the financial manager and tried to smooth talk me into accepting final price. I laughed at their faces and showed the report. Manager didn't really say anything but the sales agent shrugged it off saying 'nonsense report, don't trust it.' I pretty much told him I would never pay the initial sale price only to spend more money correcting issues printed on the report.

I went back to DC same day and eventually found my 4Runner in PA a week later :)

Thanks, that's good advice. I actually did get a PPI done, though. He found an exhaust leak the the dealer (a Toyota dealer, go figure...) hadn't. Used that as negotiating leverage. Where I messed up was not getting it up to cruising speed, 65+, during my test drive. Had some real bad wind noise coming from around the windshield at those speeds. Got home, noticed it wasn't an OEM windshield and had a piece of windshield molding missing, too. The shop is reseating the windshield and installing new OEM trim all around.

They actually just called me an hour or so ago saying they were done and it just needed time to cure. Will be ready for pickup around lunch tomorrow. They mentioned how crappy of an install job had been done on the windshield, the old urethane wasn't cleaned out prior to installing, molding wasn't fitting right, etc... Said it looked like a safelight job.

I paid 6500 for mine with a 194,000 on it no rust issues on it thought I got a good it but now I'm having second thoughts ,Changed plugs ,coil packs, fuel injector service and radiator flush . The dealer did a recall fix now its sending an P306 code so I don't know what up having a independent look at it to see if its not head gasket issue
-Just found out its a head Gasket does anyone know of a good shop in Reno, NV area?
My wife driving our sons 04 that I got for 5800 with 175,00 last year and I have put about 1k into it normal wear and tear items ,she gets upset but let her know things need to be replaced and its the boys in 3years so don't abuse it . She wants a Taco , I told her "start saving and its your payment and insurance"

2004 sport edition 70,000 miles. One owner, absolutely no rust. Religiously maintained. I paid $16,900. Overpaid but it was exactly what I was looking for and only 10 miles from my house.

Similar experience here. 2005 Limited V6. Excellent shape and dealer serviced every 5k entire life. 164k on it when I paid $8.6k. I felt like I might have paid about a thousand to much since it needed tires and some interior lights. Shortly after purchase I found the spare tire winch was bad. Replaced it myself with chain instead of cable. Only put tires and winch into it and loved it. 1st inspection needed front brakes and rotors and rear brake light. I was fine with all of it until now.

Approximately 1yr 2 mos after buying it and now with 178k I'm getting cylinder 4 misfire. Dropped it off today. They can't look at it until next Friday. I read on repair pal it's about a $3k job. That's about the most information I can get about what to expect.

I notice that a lot of people talk on here about having the issue but I don't really see any details about the outcome. Like how long did it take, how much did it cost, what problems did they run into when they pulled the heads. Warped or simply just a gasket swap? Not sure how to find a trustworthy knowledgeable mechanic in the Harrisburg PA area. Hopefully mine goes okay and I'll make sure I update my post with answers to those questions. If it doesn't go ok, I suppose I'll let you know that I had to put her down:(
