What do I need Audio-wise?

I drive a lot and most of the time I like windows down, especially since getting a 4Runner with the rear window. I would love to be able to hear my audio-books over the wind noise and I find that factory volume is not sufficient. If this is my only goal when upgrading my audio, whats do I need to do? And how much should I expect to spend?

P.S. Ear buds and headphones are too cumbersome and eventually end up bothering my delicate head.

Kenwood makes a 6x9 component set for the front of the 4Runner for around $200. Its a drop in set. Then add a small amplifier. Take a look at the Kicker Key. It will take you from about 14 watts per channel to 40 watts.

Several options to choose from, stupid simple install, excellent reviews, and affordable(ish).

It will have to wait until I’m done with my lift and wheels/tires. Hopefully this next summer.

I ended up following this guy's lead and ordered the same components (sans tweeters) for my 4Runner. It was a good mix of value and ease. Like I said, I'm not looking for much and after talking with guys at BestBuy Auto I can always add an amp to boost the system if I need. Should have stuff by Wednesday and then I'll report back with my thoughts.

I put the OEM Audio Solutions kit in my 4Runner last week and I'm very pleased with the results. I had previously found the sound in the stock system to be muddy, and the EQ options in the stock deck just didn't do enough to adjust it. Now after having installed the OEM Audio Solutions kit the built-in EQ is sufficient, all my music sounds much better with alot more depth in tones and clarity. It's an expensive upgrade but for an audiophile like me, it's very worth it.

If the goal is really just to overcome wind noise so you can hear speech, you really just need it to be louder…

Your focus should really be on amplification. If the factory speakers are not up to the task, then you can always replace them with speakers that can handle more power, but you certainly don’t need to do down the route of an audiophile if it’s just audio books.
