What do y'all do with the spare?

My spare tire hoist (4th gen) rusted out awhile back and I've been rolling risky with no spare, but I just got new tires and want/need to carry it again. Is the stock hoist/chain good enough for typical driving (no serious off-roading)?

I usually have my Thule hitch rack installed so I think rear-mount would be ruled out and honestly, not sure if I'm into that. Looks like I can get the OEM spare assembly for about $150.

Yes - Ive had to replace my spare tire winch on an 03 that rusted out. You could check ebay, used parts websites/ junk yards for used ones in good condition

My spare is in the back, behind the seats. Have it tied down with tie down straps to two of the rings in the floor. My spare tire carrier underneath is in good condition, I just prefer it in the back, if I need it it's a lot less hassle.

Going without a spare is just asking for trouble, plus the expense it will cost you when you have a flat, or damage a tire will probably be more than $150 for the price of a new rack. A rusted-out rack tells me there must be many outer things under the vehicle that are probably also rusted, time to evaluate your vehicle for future cost due to rust.

I'll say it depends on the tire you're running.

My spare has spot in garage only leaves for extended road trips city under offroad inside. LT 10 ply.
OE like tire replace the winch Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market a start.
