What do you guys use in your transfer case?

I drained my transfer case yesterday and it looked and smelled a lot like transmission fluid. I was going to refill it back but than I wanted to make sure it does use transmission fluid. So I searched online but I can't find anything clear on what type of oil to use in the transfer case. Someone please help me out.

If it is not transmission fluid than that's the probably the cause of my transmission overheating?

do you have auto trans or manual? I think I read in another post re your trans ovreheating issues that you have an auto. If you have an auto trans, you do use Dextron II to fill it up. If it is a manual trans, then its multi-purpose gear oil (Api GL-4 or GL-5)

Yes it's an auto, and thanks for clearing it up. I was worried that the shop my dad took it to might have put the wrong fluid it it. Now I feel a little better. I can't seem to find Dextron II anywhere.

Dextron III replaces II, from what the mechanics told me. I have noticed I have a pool of red liquid under mine and unfortunatly its not blood but trans fluid, I hope it is coming from the tcase and not the tranny gonna look into it when it warms up.

Autozone in my area carries Dextron II

Dex is Dex. the II and III denotes the most current chemistry or version. The auto transfer case does indeed take ATF.

Would a synthetic AT fluid help keep the transfer case a little cooler, or should I stick with reg old Dex II?

Run a synthetic fluid if you want to have it last longer.
