What do you think of this 4Runner

Guys, what do you guys think of this 4Runner? Is the price decent? Would the mileage concern you?

I did a carfax and it came up clean, with all of the scheduled maintenance. Carfax does not say if the timing belt has been changed and the dealership did not know.

Please tell me what you think. I live about 4 hours away and might have my cousin go check it out if you guys think it is worth looking into.

From my experience and readings, you cannot get maintenance records from carfax type of reports, and 99% of the time, used car dealers won't have any maintenance info (they can't be bothered to collect and file this from sellers), and lots of the time, new dealerships selling used vehicles might or might not have this info either, and this depends: for example, if the previous owner did the timing belt 10K ago, the dealer might not want you to know this so that you spend another $600.+ on timing belt and water pump replacement with them as recommended maintenance. Of course, this depends on individual dealerships' sales strategies.

Unless you can contact the previous seller, or your trusted expert mechanic can inspect and tell you, without a doubt, the timing belt looks new, your best choice is to be wise and change the belt. One exception might be if the T4R engine is a non-interference engine (can anyone in here confirm this?) whereby the pistons won't touch the valves if the belt breaks or worn teeth rip off), then you can go ahead and drive and if the belt breaks (with no engine damage), then you replace the belt then. But of course, when this happens, Murphy's Law will put you far away form home requiring a big towing bill. :p

^^ Applies if you're looking at the V8 (timing belt) and not to the V6 (timing chain).
 
Wow nice price - worth a drive-to, and a drive test plus detailed inspection. Try to get previous owner info if possible. Good luck!

No. At some point beyond the 'normal' life of the vehicle it may need a timing chain. I am talking about in excess of 250k miles.

Last time I checked 250K+ mi. is well within the normal life of a 4R ;):. If I don't turn 250K on mine without any major maintenance I'll be disappointed. :biggrin2: (major maintenance being in- depth unscheduled repairs, but not incl. somewhat labor intensive scheduled maintenance)...that seems like a lot of miles for a 2004. I just turned 50k on mine, but if the price is right i guess it doesn't matter since it is a toyota.
