I just picked up a '05 SR5 over the weekend, see my introduction thread for more info on me.

I wanted to share some pics of the undercarriage for your opinion on the level of rust. The body is in good shape, but after spending its life for the last 10 years in NY I do have some concerns of the rust it has been subjected to.

1. would you consider the rust bad for a 10 year old NE 4runner?
2. what actions can I take to remedy any issues and preventative measures going forward.

I live in NYC so I unfortunatley lack a drive way or garage to do my own work. So I would like to hear where I can take the runner to get any needed work done and estimated costs.

Yeah I'd consider it below average for the Northeast. If the previous owner never washed the undercarriage that is probably what it would look like.
I just traded an '06 that looked much better than that and our roads get treated a lot.
A few shops up here will actually spray undercarriages with waste oil to slow down the corrosion process. Not to eco-friendly I'm sure but effective. I don't get it done.

appreciate the feedback, thats what I was worried about. overall engine and body is in great shape. I think I will look for a shop that can address it now.

considering the level of rush, what can I expect for the longterm health of the vehicle.

That's really not too bad. A wire wheel and some por-15 would help it last a bit longer (although a shop will have to do it for you). After that, I would spray fluid film or undercoating (not the rubber stuff) inside the frame rails to help slow down the rust as well as on top of what was just wire-wheeled and covered with paint/por-15/whatever the shop uses. It will definitely prolong the life of your frame.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Many years left on that frame.
