What does ceiling look like with headliner removed?

Hi. I'm trying to figure out what my 1997 SR5 looks like with the headliner removed. Any 96-98 NON-SUNROOF owners out there happen to have a photo of the ceiling above the driver's seat after the headliner was removed?

I'm trying to determine if there is a bracket for the JDM field monitor up under there somewhere.

I can tell you without picture that there is no bracket. It uses the front screw hole that's inside the dome light area and two plastic hooks in the back.

If you look on your monitor there are two flat tabs out the back, these go into two rectangle looking holes that should already be there in your sheet metal.

See in this picture the two feet looking deals at the bottom of pic... these just go into the sheet metal for anchoring.

There is a good sized hole in headliners with sunroofs. You could probably start bu cutting a holes just a bit larger than the actual monitor unit but smaller than the housing.

But my question was about the other end of the monitor—that single mounting screw. You're saying there is NOTHING for it to screw into when I cut open the headliner? If so, how does the monitor secure to the ceiling besides those little "feet" on the windshield side of the monitor?

Other than the 2 feet that mount to roof near the windshield, the only other point is that 1 screw that directly mounts the unit to the roof. It's located near the dome lights. From the image Chim posted above, you can see the circular hole where the screw comes thru to mount the unit to the roof.

Those are the only 3 points where the unit is held to the roof. The screw holds everything in place with ease once the feet are in the correct slots.

Thanks, Rock. My issue is that I don't have a sunroof. And I can't seem to find someone (or a schematic/diagram) that can show me what's behind the headliner in my truck. I'd just like to know if I'm going to have to improvise a bracket for that screw, or if there's something already there.

Originally you can't attach the FMU because it uses a different bracket when the car is without moon roof.

When the car has a moon roof, there is no bracket but a nut in the original frame that is part of the moon roof structure which you dont have

Here is a picture of how I attached mine to the original bracket. I also dont have a sunroof. I drilled a hole next to the original one a installed a nut on top of the same bracket.

You can remove the bracket and weld the nut so it does not move.

Since I used an FMU from a car with a moon roof, I had to bent the bracket's rear end down ( the lip that supports the headliner) to hold the headliner lower and I put polyethylene blocks to also help remove the contour of the headliner, but in your case, you dont have to worry about that.

However, I think you might need to cut 2 small slits in the rear of the headliner so that the 2 small enforcing ribs that protrude from the case of the FMU can snug inside the headliner. You will probably see the ribs I am talking about once you try to install it.

Do you have the thermometer sensor that sits inside the left side of the front bumper?

Also, have you done the wiring already?

I do not yet have the thermometer. I have read mixed reviews: some say there is a stock OEM one that will work, some say it doesn't and instead buy aftermarket. What did you do? My '97 obviously didn't come with a thermo sensor.

I haven't done the wiring yet for the FMU. I would appreciate any insight you might have. There are lots of helpful writeups out there, so I was planning to just follow 4-Ripcord, and Rock Slide's writeup over on the Yotatech forum.

Hey I just saw your previous post - you do have to cut quite a bit to make the hole that I have in the picture.

Before I installed the FMU, I had the sunglasses compartment along with the dome lights into one. I see that you have the dome lights only, hence the smaller hole. I am not sure if the bracket is the same!

Toyota has so many configurations. I can try to search for a part number if you want.

That's your constant power, tap into that.
Ignition power will run the 1A/6 (on the back of main driver fuse panel). You will need a plug end to fit in the connector (I just grab them whenever I go to the junk yards). Otherwise, find an ignition power line to tap into.
Your ABS unit should be passenger side kick-panel, so run down the passenger side A-pillar.

If you don't have the metal frame, I posted what I think is the part # in your other thread for that bracket. It mounts to the same screws that hold the rear mirror in place. Also, that center screw is a ground, so you could use that.

What I think you can do is maybe buy the bracket from a junkyard that has a 4Runner with the sunglasses glove compartment and dome lights in one without moon roof.

Copy the shape of the opening of the same 4Runner in the junk yard so you can trace it exactly to your headliner (although you may be able to use the FMU itself)

My FMU has the controls for the moon roof and it may be so that the hole is not in the same place as the FMU without the controls as yours. Maybe you dont need to drill a new whole and use the original on the bracket. You will find out.

When you connect the FMU, it has two systems - one that has power constantly (for the compass) and one that has power only when the key is in the ACC position (FMU illumination, altimeter, barometer, temp sensor).

Ripcord mentions this.

What I did was I connected the compass wire to original dome wire because dome lights have constant power, even without the key.

The other wire I connected to the junction block that has the fuses. I believe I connected it to the ACC fuse or the GAUGE. I dont remember, but I can check.

The themosensor I bought from a junkyard here in Bulgaria from Hilux Surf ( the equivalent of the 4Runner but with a right hand drive)

I think Toyota can supply you with it.

Anyway, if you happen to be a Ham radio operator, the original controls for the moonroof make great controls for a screwdriver antenna, which i plan to use when i make mine. Or beam lights or whatever... :becky:
