So there's some disagreement here to my knowledge...
The S stands for Sport - easy enough so far...
The 5 stood for 5-speed transmission (obviously not anymore)...
The R is the questionable one, with some claiming that it stands for part of an engine code, while others claim that it's a throwback to the sport runabouts of the early 20th Century.

It was also the top in my 1st gen Runner, then it ended up as the base trim on my 16 Runner?!

Based on that, it sounds like you don't even know what 4Runner means then. One of the coolest names around in long form or short.

Strange how the top trim ended up as the base. I actually wanted the SR-5 4Runner, not the Trail and certainly not the Limited. I like to build it my way. Can't believe I thought 10K OTD was a lot for a Truck with every option available in '82! I wish there was a Modern equivilant....A Simple, small 4x4 without too much ''junk'' on it.

Even a stock SR5 is fairly capable. Toyota ran the first 5th gen on the Rubicon with only upgraded tires and sliders.
*Edit: They ran Trails, but I stand by the concept that the SR5 is capable on it's own and can be upgraded beyond a TRDOR for not much of a price difference.

SR5 is actually a little better if you plan to upgrade it. The only capability difference is the rear locker.. and adding your own typically results in a stronger differential. The older Sr5s up to 2013 also had the manual transfer case lever... but they went to the stupid dial and actuator in 2013.
My SR5 still has a 5 speed transmission - just in auto (or semi-auto sport mode). :shrug:
