What does the ECT button really do and should I have it on??

Okay so I have a 2000 2wd 4runner and i've been driving it for about 6 months, but haven't really used the ect power. I'm not exactly sure what it does but I believe it gives a little more power. Should I use it regularly whenever I drive around or will it wear more on my engine and use more gas? Thanks guys!

Changes the shift points. When activated the transmission will up shift at a later RPM and will drop down gears with less throttle.
 
ETC and pedal pressure affects on 4th gear OD

Yes but Besides the engine rpm shift point upward adjustment while moving from 1st-4th it has another impact. I've read thru the linked posts and I'm no sure it was made obvious.

Once in 4th gear with ETC On the pedal pressure required to cause the lockup in OD to turn off and begin converter slippage is lowered. So I've learned to avoid using ETC at all and of course using OD override when going up hills to avoid converter slippage in 4th. Another thing to consider when using it.

It's On by default and works in 3rd and 4th gears (not sure about 2nd).

You can turn it off with the OD button on the left side of the shifter. Usually I turn it off when going up significant hills while in 4th gear, the rpms will increase and you'll get more hp/torque to climb hills or pass another vehicle more easily. Just try it you'll see and learn how to use it. Also helpful when towing uphill and to control transmission temps from getting too high. :cowboy:

I was going to say this. Went to the beach a while back with the tent on, driving into a pretty stiff headwind (20-30 mph) and noticed the converter would unlock frequently. I wish I had a transmission Temp gauge to watch the trans temp while it was doing that. I find that even when loaded down, lifted and on 33s, I get worse mileage and poor driving with ECT ON. just my experience.

OD keeps the RPM lower to save on fuel. Depending on the load and speed, the torque converter (think clutch) opens and allows the engine to "slip" at a higher RPM, where it theoretically makes more power. However, when it does that it generates a lot of heat. Not good for old transmissions.
