Yes, that's my goal, to avoid having another car payment until our '17 4Runner is paid off. The U-joints were replaced by the original owner at 139k miles - actually the dealership performed the work at no cost. Could that have been a recall issue? Regarding ball joints, is there a way to determine if they are needing replacement? Finally, forgive me, but what is the TRE acronym? Thanks!

I saw someone else covered "TRE" but as far as balljoints go, I don't think there's a great way to be sure your lower balljoints are good, as they can fail catastrophically without warning. If you don't have any record of them being done in the last 50-75k, you should probably just go ahead and replace them for peace of mind - they're not terrible expensive and easy to replace yourself. If you can change your own oil you should be able to replace the lower balljoints, especially with [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] 's how-to videos.

The upper balljoints are kind of a pain in the ass, but they aren't known for making your wheel fall off when they fail.
