What Gears For 33's

I have a 92 4runner with a 3.0 and automatic transmission. What gear ratio would you all recommend ?

Normally 4.88's would be good for 33's, but since you have an auto trans, you need to go one step lower, so 5.29's would be good.

On my 87 22re i was running 33 1050 15 bfg mts and had the stock 4.10s and done awsome and got good gas mileage. Buddy of mine had a 92 22re and was running 5.29s lots of torque but wasnt that good on gas. Kinda depends what your intensions are.

I am running 33"s with 4:88's and it works perfectly for me. The trick to the automatic is to shift it manually so that it doesn't upshift too quickly. I also leave the overdrive off around town.

I'd go with 5.29, autos need lower gears that manuals.

Get some LC axles (or dana 44/60s) and you can bolt on portals... oh man. Only in my wettest dreams. Haha. :boom:

i have a 3.0 auto with 32 inch tires. i regear to 4.88 and i think its more than enough considering how much weight i have added already.
in overdrive around 2800 rpm, im doing around 65mph GPS and around 70mph speedo

reason i went with 488 is cost. i only had to regear the rear and buy a used factory front ifs 4.88 diff. not really cost effective to regrear the front to 5.29

if your SA. than i guess its a toss up with 4.88 and 5.29 with 32/33

If your truck came with the optional 31" tires, it already has 4.88 gears in it. The next one is to go 5.29 for auto.

Debatable. Some only had 4.56. Depends what other options it had too, such at a tow package. Best way to know for sure is to read the door code.

I guess thats a good point. No one asked what you were running currently. What ratio is in your diffs now?

If you already have 4.56s, then go to 5.29. You probably wont notice the jump from 4.56 to 4.88.

Also be aware that door codes are not foolproof either. There were some 1995 models (and maybe other years) that came from the factory with the wrong codes.

I went to 5.29 when I moved up to 35's after SAS. I plan to go back down to 4.88 since I've swapped the 3.4 engine. 3000rpm at 65 mph is not ideal.

Wow, lots of advise. My runner came factory with 31's and I'm running 32's now and I can tell the difference. If I'm going to regear I'm going on up to 33's. Sounds like 5.29's might be the ticket.

I'm waiting for the reverse cut front gear from a local vendor. I'll have front reverse cut and rear 8" for sale as soon as I take them out.
