What gen is the best for off-roading?

Just stepped into a yota

I had a 1991 Suzuki samurai that was fully caged with 84 yota axels locked front and rear. Was a great truck off road but no heat or ac or doors or roof. Sold that and bought a 98 taco with 4" lift and 350,000k on the 3.4l best decision ever!!!!! As long as you keep an eye on your lower ball joints you shouldn't have any problems getting in over up or down anything in your way.

That's getting a little too specific. I'd have to break that down into 10 polls to get all the possibilities covered. Let's say the gen with a moderate level of modification allowable for all off road conditions...

In that case I would have to go with 2nd gen with a small lift, 3.4 v6 standard trd with a j shift t case. Hands down the most capable off road with the least amount of modds.

Early gens Solid axle is by far easier and cheaper to modify for an off road setup that can handle pretty much anything. But the ride isn't as nice on pavement. I would use this as solely a trail rig. I own a 5th gen and I love it! Currently on a 3" lift. The trail traction control systems DAC and A Track are actually very capable as alternative to lockers. I do well in thick clay, rock climbs, mud pits. If you understand all your trail systems and when to use them and when to turn all traction control off completely it'll be hard to get stuck. Soon I plan on a long travel suspension set up for my ifs +3.5 total 7" wider. The ride is smooth and you can get way more than enough wheel travel. I get through tight trails fine with 2" wheel spacers. And carry a chainsaw at all times in case. These kits cost several thousand dollars though. I'm a welder fabricator and will extend the stock control arms and axle shafts myself. The back is easy. So it depends on what you want.

I just purchased a 2023 4Runner SR5 xp 4.0 v6 rwd (could not get a 4wd due to not having in trim I wanted) I’m a plumber and I bought it to work out of when doing side work and plan on buying a rental property in mountains. How capable is the rwd with all terrains in the snow? And am I better off driving it see how it handles in snow and if need be just upgrade to a 4Runner 4x4 if needed

Snow tires would be good. It's would be fine on plowed roads but at Highway speeds and snowy road conditions could cause an issue. Most of the time I drive in 2wd during the winter with At tires but there are instances of going up hill or around long bends when 4 wheel comes in handy.

In snow? I would think not very. Run some bags of salt in the rear over your rear tires to give a little more traction. That’s what everyone with 2nd trucks does around here when we get a little snow. You could always sell it and probably not lose your butt. Runners are hard to come by. With scarcity come opportunity.

i have a 5th gen. But based on the question, i would probably pick the third gen, the 4th gen is a skipper for me.
