what gives? i still cant get my dang fuel filter off!

Do you still have good shaped faces on the fitting? If so, try using a crescent wrench and tightening it real good on there before turning. That worked for me on my brake lines (wrenches did the same thing, right size but rounded the fitting).
If you don't have good faces on the fittings, then either clean them up with a dremel or a file or something, or just replace the lines on either side of the filter. You can get both for under $45. I plan on replacing mine because they are a bit rusty and I want to replace the fuel filter.

Yeah I had the same problem with mine. I even tried a small pipe wrench and lots of PB oil and no go. I was worried that I might break the fuel line so I just held off on it and ordered a new fuel line section going to the engine compartment. Cost me $60 but it's something I don't have to worry about. This seems to be a common problem.

When I did mine on my '97 it was a nightmare getting those line fittings off the filter. I ended up using a vice grip after a correctly sized open end wrench rounded the fittings to the point that I was worried I'd never get them off.
I've since found out that the proper tool is a line wrench... it looks similar to an open ended wrench, except it's got a total of 6 sides that grab the bolt. The open end side has a smaller opening than normal, so that the wrench comes around and grabs the opposite side of the bolt, yet you can still fit it over the line... just google "line wrench" and you'll see what I mean. I bought a set to use when the time comes on my '01.

UMmmmm.....yeah....about those specail wrenches. i have a complete set. thats what i used before this frustration. and it still slipped and began to round the edges....so i just quit prior to max f-up. then a couple days ago after talkin to my mechanic, i took a pair of vice grips and got them as tight as i could possibly get them on the nut, FAIL again.
so that when i decided to ask u guys. looks like ill b takin a trip to the STEALESHIP to get those new fuel line parts from the filter to the tank....or how ever far back i gotta go till its not the metal fuel line.

No, get them online. Toyotapartsales.com. Way cheaper than the dealership. Unless you need them tomorrow, no need to spend the extra money (assuming the dealership can get them tomorrow.
Also, just be sure you can get the other side of each fuel line off before you commit to it. You may have the same problem on the other end as well.

Yup. Apparently you need to check the manufacture date for the right part number.
Front side:
7/2000 or before: 77251-3D140
8/2000 and after: 77521-3D350
Tank side:
7/2000 or before: 77252-35350
8/2000 and after: 77522-35370
I don't know the difference between the 2, but you can probably call them, or enter your VIN when you place the order and they should be able to help you get the right one.
If you break the brackets, they should be able to get you those too.
BTW, I have e-mailed them for help in identifying the part I was looking for and they responded very quickly and found me the right part. You could probably call them or e-mail them with the description of what you need and they could get you the correct part number to order.

Wow... Those things must really be on there. That's all I've got man. If you replace the lines you should do a writeup... I bet there's alot of owners that run into this problem.

Yeah this is the only thing that i needed help with, my dad did it for me, i would have messed up the lines had i touched it.

I have had the same issue with rounding off the corners of the flare nuts on my brake lines. I just replaced my fuel filter on my '96 5VZFE a couple of nights ago. I hit it with some penetrating oil and used two wrenches and it came right off. I have found that my flare nut wrenches, which are kind of cheap, tend to grab the corners and damage the nut a lot more than a high quality modern open end wrench that grips the center of the flat (like a Snap-On Flank Drive or equivalent). Best of luck!

Did any of you guys try de-pressurizing the fuel system prior to undoing the compression nut fittings? it could have a little effect as to why they're tight, I dunno..:shrug:
I just call myself lucky cause I didn't run into any troubles like most of y'all are having, and I used a regular type open wrench, too.
