What have YOU towed??

I haven't seen a dedicated towing thread, so why not start one here? (I didn't look very hard though )

Last night I towed my girlfriends broken down POS '01 Pontiac "Van Damme" using a uhaul (I f*cking hate uhaul) dolly.

The V8 seemed to pull the load no problem up hills, down hills and cruising on the highway. Even in top gear going 65 the engine could use torque alone to increase speed at low rpm.

I haven't had the opportunity to tow anything in the 4R since I've had it, so even though it was only a ~3500 lb car, it was enough to see what she could do.

I have towed a u-haul trailer loaded to the gills with furniture & other crap. Went from Atlanta to New orleans with my 97 T4R V6. No problems except for the cheap wiring u-haul did that kept shorting out my lights. Yeah, it got really interesting when the sun went down & I ran out of fuses!!

I have towed my 4000# boat/trailer with no problems. I could tell it was there, but never had any issue maintaining my speed going up hills. A world of a difference from my parents old 2002 JGC with a v6.

I've towed the biggest trailer U-Haul has loaded to the top with camping gear. I was worried about whether the v6 could handle it, but was amazed at how well it pulled. I kept it in 3rd gear all the way, and at 65-70mph, the rpm range was around 2000-2200. I barely felt the trailer except when braking and going over bumps.

Also, i agree with other members that U-Haul sucks. I also had a problem with the lights. They worked fine when I left the place, but later on at night they stopped working. I played with all the wiring and connections to make sure it was all secure, but still nothing. So I decided to forget about it, and next thing I know it started working again. Never went out after that. They need to better maintain their vehicles.

I Tow This..... The weight of trailer and car inside is around 5,500 lbs. The 4Runner had no trouble what-so-ever climbing hills (3-4K feet high) pulling this load. I wish I had a $1 for every time someone at a rest area just could not believe the 4Runner could tow this loaded trailer easily.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering what kind of gas mileage I get when towing I hit an all time low of 7.25 mpg climbing the 3-4K feet high hills. Usually I get between 8-9 mpg when not climbing hills. My last trip with the loaded trailer I got 2 mpg more coming back (with a Strong tailwind) then when I went (Strong Headwind). All mpg figures are actual, calculated, figures not the figures from the mpg display on the dashboard (which always read hifer than actual, even when towing)

Well nothing like you guys, but one reason i got this truck was for sailing. Ive towed my hobie, and i cant even tell it is there, although the boat with the riging and trailer together must wiegh less than 800 lbs. i kept looking back and saying holy crap.

People probably don't know that 4Runner of yours has the V8 engine as in the Tundra. There is no question how much that V8 can tow. However, I towed a Nissan Sentra using my 05 SR5 V6 with ease. It's kinda suprise how potent this V6 is also, but I will not tow anything over the suggested limit. If I need some serious towing, I will trade mine in for a V8

18.5' Sea Ray.....it's heavy for a little guy, but the 4Runner seems to have no trouble. Look closely and you can see a black 2003 4R sneeking into the pic

I've towed our 30' boat with it numerous times. In fact, whenever someone wants to take out the boat they borrow my truck

Trailer weighs 1800 lbs.

Car weighs 2500 lbs.

I usually take 300-350 lbs of spares, wheels, tools, etc with me. This gets stashed in the back of the 4Runner.

Total weight is around 4600-4700 lbs.

My 4Runner is a 2005 SR5 V8 and tows much better than the 2002 Dodge Ram1500 (4.7l) I used to own.
