What is a VSS/Reverse harness... and do I need one?

You do need the VSS hooked up. found that out yesterday. I just soldered straight to the pin and it worked great. You solder a wire to the center pin of the 5 pin spot. the wire then attaches to a red and purple wire below the radio behind the HVAC controlls in a wiring bundle covered in tape.
Without the VSS the unit is a bit jumpy and while it shows where you are, it will not give you the turn by turn directions.
Unless you are using a reverse camera you do not need to wire up the reverse wire.
(not even sure they work on this model because I dont know where it would plug into... the spot I thought was for it I guess is for the AUX input)

As Pirate says, Yeah, its best to wire it up. Harnesses are next to impossible to get, so you can carefully solder the VSS/reverse wire to the appropriate pins (Here's a link with the information you will need)

btw: for ANY model toyota nav (E7003, E7019 or whatever) the VSS (not sure about the reverse) MUST be wired for the gps to work properly.
I sold this unit because I am poor... but this is very good info and I hope others in the future will be able to use it. One thing I noticed about the 4Runner when I was in there looking around at things is how tidy everything is. The wires are all bundled nicely and easy to get to. The whole setup just seems like incredible quality.
I have been inside a lot of dashboards in my day and there is some real crap out there. Nissans are horrendous. I've worked on a lot of them and it just seems like they didn't care. Same goes with Suzuki, Dodge, and quite a few others. It looks like they took their time and thought things out when building and designing the 4Runner and that makes it so much easier to do modifications and deal with things like upgrading or fixing the audio system. I am highly impressed.
I did try the E7019 out for a couple of days and it was giving me audio directions and it seemed to know where I was and I never had those wires hooked up. I don't know how I got it to do all of that, but it was a pretty fun unit to play around with. Some of the features (like service intervals and such) were extremely cool. I wish I could have kept it and used it to its full potential. Now I'm back to the low end factory Pioneer stocker. How depressing! I'm tempted to buy one of those Urban Runner radios just because they are going for like $100 and they do navigation. Is that a horrible idea or what? I am sure it is.

I just got a E7007 and hooked it up to the existing connectors on my 08 limited, but the unit won't accept a map DVD.
do I need the VSS wire for it to load the map DVD/software?
I don't think so, but just checking - i think I got a defective unit.

Mine sucked in my map disc without being hooked up to the VSS. Will it not even suck in the disc, or is it sucking in the disc and just not doing anything?
If you have the wrong disc, it will suck it in and just do nothing, still displaying the same message to insert the navigation disc (or whatever phrase it uses)
