What is ASL

I have the stock base audio system on my 06. The manual does not explain what ASL is? It just seems to increase Bass. What is ASL and what is the acronym mean?

I think that is for Automatic Sound Level. It is the feature where the volume will change according to the speed driven when the windows are down. I'm sure some 2006 owners can comment as this feature was introduced in the 4runner that year.

My pioneer headunit has this feauture, but i do not like it much at all.. there will be times where the volume goes up so much it sounds distorted.. Have a try with it, and see if you like it or not.

The nav head unit is only on or off. The base radio has like 3 or 4 settings: high, med, low or off. I don't notice it raising the volume or anything when it's on and I still fiddle with the volume from time to time depending on city or freeway driving, maybe my MP3s' volumes aren't normalized. However, since the 4R is much quieter than most vehicles, city volume levels can be heard quite well on the freeway.

Play around with it, you may like the feature (use to be only on Lexus vehicles) or you might just find it like me--makes no significant difference on or off. I just leave it on.

I'm one of the people who doesn't like it. I had a friend with a BMW 3-series and it would annoy the hell out of me. The increase in volume at higher speeds wasn't equivalent to the extra noise at those speeds, so you still had to adjust the volume around. I don't know though, I have a NAV with ASL coming in soon, so I'll have to see how I like it when I have it.

I dont like it. The volume changes to much. Gm has had this feature and it works fine cause you have a low med and high adjustment.

The Toyota stock unit has low, med, high as well. Now that I have learned what ASL is I have turned it off

The Scion HU I have has the three level ASL. I have it on "Low" and it seems to work very subtly, but maybe because I don't drive with the windows down at highway speeds? Is it really inactivated when all windows are up?

The ASL in a 4Runner with nav works fairly well. When my truck was in for service, the Camry loaner had the ASL with low, medium, and high adjustments. Medium and high was very annoying and seemed to distort the music.

Search led me to this thread...
I've always wondered why the ASL wasn't working, and I saw in a previous post that the windows have to be down for this to work? Is it windows all the way down, partly down, one or both windows?

I have this in my 06 and it annoys me.

I thought when I changed out the head unit, it would go with it... NOPE.

Anyone know how to disable it when you have an aftermarket head unit?

ASL feature in my 4Runner never worked properly, so I don't use it.

On the other hand, the same feature in my wife's GX works great.

Go figure

been wondering what that was for 3 years now.... i always have my windows down, I should give it a try and see if i like it :/
