I have a 2000 runner with the 2.7 4 cylinder only 122K on the clock.
A couple of weeks ago I drove down to pick my gf up from work when the A/C stopped blowing cold air. When I got there I popped the hood to find the A/C belt laying on the bottom snapped in half. Out of caution I replaced all three belts with ones from the local Autozone (duralast brand).
Ever since I have been noticing a burning rubber smell coming from the engine bay and sometime notice a faint smell blowing through the A/C vents. I do not know if there is something wrong with my belt installation or if it just happens to be a coincidence and something else is making the smell.
The belts are not making any abnormal sound of any kind and do not squeal even if I spray them with water. I further inspected the belt's and their tension as well as their alignment on the pulleys.
I saw two what I believe to be problems. The power steering belt seems to have a very slight misalignment between the idler pulley and the pump pulley. I tried loosening and readjusting the belt with no luck it always comes out looking the exact same way.
The alternator belt however looks as if it could be the culprit for the problem. I can't believe I missed it after I installed the new belts but there seems to be a pretty serious misalignment between the alternator pulley and the crank pulley.
The alternator looks as if though it is almost an in inch north of the other pulley :shocked: In other words, the alternator would need to be moved back towards the firewall to align properly. I tried taking the belt off and readjusting multiple times but there is no way I can see to fix this problem.
Has anyone else experienced this? I am getting so frustrated with this I've adjusted the belts multiple times and do not even know if it is whats causing the smell at all :ybrick: Oh one more thing, I have checked all of the pulleys and they all spin free with no binding or other problems that I can detect.
