What is my Toyota dealer talking about?

Pretty sure this would fit your 4R. It's from a 5th gen. No association just saw the post on the classifieds. This is everything you would need. It'll be a very mild "lift" as the 5th gens are taller.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on cross compatibility.

Why?

While we are kinda on topic about collapsed xreas. How do you know the system is trash? Like if there’s an obvious leak, that’s easy. But without a smoking gun of a leak how can you tell it’s time to replace?

Good Question im also in the same boat..tho i don't think i have that much sag when compared to other 4th gens without xreas. Ive pretty much made up my mind with the 5100's when i am ready to do suspension.

See the before picture I posted. Seemed to drive fine but the UCAs were pointed up, they should be pointed down with a good, even stock suspension. If you have over 150k miles on the stock XREAS, I would seriously consider changing it.

Why?

They are similar to others on the vehicle and can be back ups if you loose some.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Geez, After trying to sort through all the info here about shocks I was more confused than ever.
Now it's time to find the stuff I need to order.

That dealer is a disgrace, to the point you might consider reporting them to Toyota corporate b/c they are tarnishing the company's reputation with "estimates" like that.

The link in my sig may be helpful as it has info, pics, and links from when I changed from worn out X-REAS to a TRD Offroad/FJ setup for $200 total. The ride is terrific on and off the pavement. Search "TRD suspension" in FB Marketplace for example to find sets people have taken off, just be sure they fit (mine is from a 2015 Tacoma and xtremewlr I think has it from a 2019). You might consider Spidertrax spacers too as they widen the stance to what (IMO at least) 4Runners should look like from the factory (more info & pics also linked in my sig).

My YouTube channel is also linked and you can see some of the places I've been on that suspension. A great example is the vid for the 2019 Kentucky Toyota Trail Ride.

I'm also happy to answer any questions as best I can. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

When I pulled mine, the XREAS was still in great shape after 10 years and 110k miles but the springs were absolutely done, especially on the front which accentuated the existing limited squat. System pressure was fine and oil inside looked factory-fresh.

Would have kept XREAS if I could have swapped springs without touching the system but nuked it in favor of FJ springs and 5100s.

Also, OP, never, ever return to said dealer. This is one of the most gratuitous instances of shady dealer gouging I've seen. Inexcusable.

I have a 2004 4runner V8 Sport and am checking out my options for replacing the Shocks/Struts.

I got a quote from my local Toyota dealer for $4,000 to replace the shocks and for $6,000 if I want to ditch the Xreas system and replace the Xreas with normal shocks instead. I asked why do normal shocks cost so much more and he said an adapter is needed in order to use normal shocks on my car.
Adapters? WTF is he talking about? What is so different about these shocks that other shocks need adapters to install?

I actually plan on doing the conversion myself but got curious about what the dealer would charge.

Ridiculous.

For all I knew, all the dealerships charge that. I wish I had gotten a written estimate or I could report them.

The great thing with these is you can pick what you want, there's lots of options. A few weeks ago I was able to find some strut assembly take-offs from a Gen5. I got them on E-bay for a bit over $140ish including shipping and they look like they are brand new. Amazing how much better it handles bumps and the nose is up where it should be now. All I had to do was shave some metal off the lower mount point on the shock.

Good question. I bought my '03 used about 6 years ago and it was xreas. When I went to pick it up from dealer the night I bought it they were just putting on a new front shock and told me they are really expensive. At the time I didn;t know what xreas even was!
I had no suspension complaints except I noticed a kind of "hollow" sound in the winter over some bumps. Anyway after joining this forum and reading about better suspension I decided to replace mine "just because".
By that time I knew I had xreas and was ready to disconnect it properly but as I started to remove it I broke one of the lines at shock loose just to see what would happen ... nothing ... the system had no gas pressure. I didn't even know it. So it may not be all that obvious when Xreas goes bad if trhere is no external oil leak.
By the way, the "hollow" sound in the winter is gone too!
