What is that clicking??

I have an 03 v8 4runner. On cold starts, it sounds as if the valves are clicking. The colder the vehicle, the louder the click. It goes away after about 5-10 minutes. Ive heard toyotas just click like that but i want to know why...any clues?

Does it happen when the vehicle is stationary or moving?

anytime its cold...its motor related, not driveline if thats what youre asking. If i put it in drive in a drive thru or beside a wall or something, you can hear it much better than just idling in park or neutral. almost like a bad valve click...

You can take off your serpentine belt, start the engine and run it just long enough to see if you still have the noise. If it quits you know it one of the things the belt drives. That can at least rule out the engine itself.

And you can get a very long screwdriver and put the pointy end to different parts of the engine and place your head against the handle and see if you can feel the clicking.

how many miles on your engine. It may need to have the valve clearance checked
