What is this ball mount part?

I used the receiver hitch for the first time last week. In the box for the ball mount was the mount, the pin that holds the mount in the receiver, the cotter pin for the mount pin and a metal ring, maybe 1 in high and 1 inch in diameter. Anyone know what this ring is for?

I would assume it's a spacer ring in case your ball was 3/4" so that you can convert it so it's usable on the 1" hitch that Toyota supplies.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I've never used the hitch.

I learned that the ring is for when you purchase a ball smaller than the hole itself, and keeps it from slidding side to side. I had a ball installed, but it was too loose. That is when I realized what the ring was for: I later returned, and the part star assisted with the install, and it was a perfect fit.
