What is this for?

That button is used to lock the center differential when you are in 4wd. It will lock in the front and rear drive shafts to spin at the same rate. DO NOT engage this switch unless you are on a surface that can give or your system will bind (if you lock it say on pavement and make a hard turn). You will mostly likely only need it if you get stuck offroad.

However, it is safe to drive in H4 fulltime on pavement. If you have the V8 model, you're in already in H4 anyway. As long as the center diff is unlocked (switch off) on dry pavement you are ok.

It's kind of useless 99% of the time so you are just better off making sure the light for that button isn't lit up on your dashboard.
