What is this noise?!

I would love to know as well. I have the exact same noise under the exact circumstances described. Mine stopped by itself, but I still want to know what and why.

Before it stopped, I had done some research that seemed to suggest that lubing the driveline or replacing u-joints were possible solutions.

I lubed the front propeller shaft a few nights ago and it didn't help. I have to do the rear shaft next.

I would have thought it to be the front too, especially judging from where the noise is coming from

That's what I was hoping. Total let down when I took it for a drive and the noise was still there.

Hey I just noticed this exact same noise!

I've only owned my '99 Limited for about three weeks now and haven't heard this prior to yesterday, which was the coldest day of the year yet here. 15 degrees F. I also kept the vehicle outside all night instead of in the garage as I did prior. I think it went away as the vehicle warmed up some.

Is it cold by the rest of you?
 
It just started getting colder here, but it doesn't go away as it warms up.

Sort of sounds like a noisy bearing in a pulley.

But, I wonder if it could be the flex plate between the engine and transmission. I remember hearing the flex plates on our Auto Trans 3rd Gens are known to crack and then become noisy. Hopefully that's not it because that quite a bit of work to replace.
 
Noisy like what? And a lot of work, but is it particularly difficult work?

I was not driving our truck when the flex plate failed so I can't speak to the noise you are hearing.

However if it does fail the truck is done moving at that point. So you'll have to have it towed, etc....

When ours failed it was 10 hours away from home so we had a local shop replace it instead of towing it back home and doing it here.

The advice I received on this forum is that you need to pull the transmission back so you can get at it and although not requiring any specialty tools you do need to be comfortable doing that type of work. More importantly I always find having a good place to do the work with the correct jacks, stands, etc... invaluable.

there is a way you can inspect it using a flexible inspection camera to see if it is developing a crack.

I will more than likely have to have a shop take a look at it as I do not have what I need to complete such a task where I live right now unfortunately. But the flex plate does seem to make sense.

I checked out that info, thank you for that. I dont have the ticking/knocking though. I don't even experience any noise when I am sitting at a standstill or even when I rev it up. It literally only does it when I let off the gas and am in motion.

This is my experience as well. And it seems sporadic too. One trip it is there, the other it is not.

At first I thought it may have been one of the fans blowing heating/AC squeaking; however turning off all fans does not stop the noise.

Yea! It sounds like its coming from under you, right? I cant feel anything happening mechanically, it's just the noise.

To me it actually sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. I suspected it was MAYBE the leather seats squeaking under vibration but that doesn't appear to be the case. The sound definitely happens after I let go of the throttle. Also the frequency appears to increase with speed
 
I just developed a rotational type noise, I can't really hear if it's the same as that. I haven't torn into it, but I suspect it's one of the u-joints on mine. It's rotational click / squeak, increases with vehicle speed, and a bit of vibration.
 
well I rolled my windows down and now can hear the sound coming from basically underneath center area. It sounds like OP's recording and increases in frequency with speed. Only happens after I'm done accelerating

Edit: I took the long way home from work today. The noise was present for about the first half of the trip and then just faded away and I haven't heard it for the rest of the ride. Perhaps this has something to do with the vehicle not being warmed up enough before driving around?

Yes! I'm not alone! I also haven't delved into much yet but my theories with exception to the flex plate (doesn't seem like it to me) have all been expressed. I'm going to lube both driveshafts and see if I can lube ujoints. Will report back once that work is done.

So this morning I let the vehicle warm up for about ten minutes before going on my daily commute. The sound still occurred but was significantly quieter to the point that I thought I was imagining it. At some point through the drive it appears to have 'disappeared'
