What is this part?

I found this part and wire harness in the engine compartment, right by the battery. Some kind of a gadget with a wire harness running back to the fuse box area inside.

Clearly not an original installation, but I wonder if it's something dealer installed or a later addition? Anyway, what is it?

I bet you're right - I was thinking it's some kind of an alarm related thingie. So those were not factory installed?

Oh wow, really? I didn't know I had one of those, I thought they only came on Sport models .

Pre-99 the alarms and/or remote system were port/dealer installed. Post '99, the alarm portion of the keyless system was basically a plug-in module and all the trucks had keyless entry.

I'd say Charlie is correct, though for the OP I'll go out on a limb and say it is a tracking device so the real title holder of Leon's 4runner can come and snatch it in the middle of the night.

So is it just for the enable/disable chirping, or does it also make the sound when the alarm is activated (or do the horns sound when the alarm goes off)?
