What is this?

The color of the wires is consistent with the standard for trailer wiring.

I'm pretty sure it's an adaptor to convert trailer lights so the same bulb can be used for the brake lights and for the turn signals.

HA! Just looked at it quickly before, and just now read it has a SIM card. I have no clue what it is. Rather than delete my post, I'll just shamefully leave. it. there.

its either this or some type of vehicle tracking like lo-jack ect. they generally hide them better than that. i bet the sim card is for the serial number and owner info. that way i can be changed out and reprogrammed with different info and frequencies for different areas and users.

i have lo-jack on my rigs, but the i dont know where their beacon is at... it could be anywhere. the installers wont tell the owner because if the owner doesnt know, their is less of a chance that they will be able to disable it and have the vehicle stolen to commit insurance fraud... so having never seen on of the transceivers, i can not be 100% sure that, that item is that, but if i had to guess thats where id put my $$$
 
damnit, you know what that is, it just hit me, thats a flux capacitor. stuppid me for not recognizing that right off :rockthrow:
 
After one of my trucks was stolen, I looked for a lot of different tracking devices for recovery options. A lot of the less expensive options have the sim card. Most of them are able to transmit pretty exacting details of where you are, where you've been, how fast you traveled and when receiving the kill code from the right phone number, will kill the engine by way of either ECU (sounds like how it is wired in your case) fuel pump or stopping the spark in general.

My first thought would be finding out whether or not the sim card is active... and if it is, who is paying for the subscription.
 
Do you still have the original remote/fob? I know it's getting harder to find the originals, maybe it's a generic replacement remote/fob receiver spliced into the system?

I just watched a demo of how OnStar will flash the parking lights of a stolen vehicle when the police are tracking it. Perhaps this is a similar, less sophisticated cellular version.
 
Could you put up a picture of where it's at under the dash? I remember when I was wiring my trans temp gauge I saw an in-line fuse under there and wanted to know wtf it was for. And out of curiosity did you try taking the fuse out of it and checking to see if a certain something doesn't work?
 
When I eventually sell my 4Runner, I'm going to pull a circuit board out of an old video player or something and fake wire it up to some under dash stuff....This is an excellent prank!

Lol! I've always liked the zip tie on a CV or driveshaft so it smacks against something. Makes a racket, even better if you can stick a huge wad of silly putty or gum into the wheel to give it a little wobble. It makes for seriously concerned expressions and sometimes foul words :D

Friend did this to me with like 3 or 4 zip ties around the CV of my 2500HD...never heard a noise or suspected anything for weeks until I noticed one of the really long zip ties hanging down.

I don't have a pic but it was just shoved up under the dash directly under the steering collum. I pulled the inline fuse and it didn't affect anything that I could see.
